Malibu

About Me

The Malibu is ancestral home to the Chumash, a Native American tribe that historically inhabited coastal Southern California, in the general vicinity of what are now Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles Counties. The Chumash were hunter-gatherers, as well as capable fishermen. They are one of the relatively few New World peoples who regularly navigated the ocean. Some Chumash settlements, such as the one at Malibu, built plank boats called tomols. Remains of the Chumash culture, including petroglyphs, can still be found amid their ancient homelands. The Malibu is also a legendary surf site, a classic point break. Its history relative to surfing is quite brief, but quite storied.
