Velo's third release is the first offering from the duo who call themselves 'Congregation'. Hailing from the New Cross bedsit scene, looking like a couple of gangsters from the depression era, Congregation have lately been injecting the Blues and R&B genre with a heavy dose of class and soul. Benjamin Prosser (Slide Guitar, Bass drum) and Victoria Yeulet (vocals, leg bells) play the kind of raw, prowling and seductive blues that have the power to restore one's faith.
Side A is 'Don't Pay No Mind', a sparse blues paean to a busted relationship, filled with boogie and swagger. Victoria wails with a voice that never fails to chill and this is a voice that manages to conjure up all of her fallen sisters in arms back from the dead. Prosser is a dark presence, wavering in the background, playing slide riffs and thumping a bass drum with his foot. Side B is 'Building a Wall Around My Heart', a cover of Susan Hill's rare soul classic (find it if you can). This choice reflects Congregation's background of dusty 78s and impossible to find 7s. These two breath it.

The Duke Spirit's first EP was Originally released through
the City Rockers Label in 2003 on 12" vinyl & CD.
Roll Spirit Roll consists of songs recorded to 8 track
by the Dukes and mentor Simon Raymonde between their North
London home and a beaten up studio by the sea in Brighton.

An obsession with recently departed musical mentors led
The Duke Spirit, holed up in a country retreat, to lay down
interpretations of songs by Arthur Lee, Desmond Dekker and
Jessie Mae Hemphill. The essentially home-made results are
a narcotic blend of psychedelia and melancholic blues which
bear The Duke Spirit hallmark of sonic defiance.
The first and last Velo release for 2006 is a two-pronged assault;
a limited edition 7” and simultaneous limited period download.
Covered in Love 7” ('A House is Not a Motel' by Arthur Lee)/ '007'
by Desmond Dekker), released Monday Dec 11th, is available from
Rough Trade, Pure Groove and Piccadilly Manchester.
Both tracks from the 7", plus I'm So Glad' (Jesse Mae Hemphill) and 'A message To a Pretty' (Arthur Lee) are available as downloads from 'rough-trade digital' & 'iTunes'.
