WHO IS BIRDGANG?BirdGang is an 'Aahehop' based Dance Company; a group of individuals from all over the world who have come together as a family to deliver a message: “Die or Flyâ€. This bold motto means to always keep your head up even when you are knocked down or have great hurdles to overcome, because in the end; “you will find what you’ve been looking for". Through art, dance, and music they aim to move and capture peoples' hearts and bring them into their world, to experience a new wave of emotion and to view the HipHop art form in a new light. Their goals are not just to entertain but to explore social issues through their work. The target audience is everyone, with a strong emphasis on the youth as (at the risk of sounding cliché) they are the future.
The 'birds' in the company are from various backgrounds, from Doves to Avocets and from as far as Jupiter to the Philippines. They all have a unique and individual style which adds diversity and layers to the company. BG does not audition. If you want to be part of their movement they will find you. Because they are trying to make an impact on the world, they fail to understand how they could pick a member on just the condition of their feathers (dance ability) as opposed to their Wing-span (mentality and frame of mind) as surely this will affect how far and high they can fly with the flock. BG believe a dancer is as only as strong as their own mentality and approach to life and to their art-form.
They are the forefront developers of a dance style known as 'Aahehop'. Although they are not interested in names and putting labels on everything many people would ask “what style of dance is that called? Contemporary or Hiphop maybe Street jazz with a bit of African“. So they came up with the name 'Aahehop' which is now slowly spreading all around the world.
The company is not about performing the latest steps to the newest songs or being another commercial representation of what you would see on MTV. Again that’s not to say they don’t entertain, but merely to say they perform in order to convey a message through the music, choreography, theme and narrative.
Their biggest goal is to show the world the REBIRTH of HIPHOP as a respectable art-form as opposed to just a hobby or a culture plagued with negative connotations. It is also to put the exhuberance, the ART, and soulful feeling back into HipHop. Their shows are now being referred to as HipHop Theatre and without wanting to reject their roots they prefer just to call it Theatre.
