Richard Kaufmann

About Me

"Governed by classic pop songwriting(think Jimmy Webb and John Sebastian) and production sensibilities and Kaufmann's delectable wheezy croon. He's a 60's revisionist who deserves to work in his chosen vintage, as he knows how to operate the machinery and pull the strings...a fine, fine solo effort." Patrick Berkery--Phila. Weekly....."Despite it's wide palette of sounds, they all sound like they come from the same record collection. If you've gotta grow up, this is the way to do it." Sam Adams--City Paper....."Kaufmann never fails to amaze and impress" Kevin Mathews--Power of Pop.....Richard Kaufmann has been a fixture of the Philadelphia music scene for over two decades. In 1984 Kaufmann formed the legendary Electric Love Muffin with Frank and Brian Campbell. Butch Lauer would join shortly thereafter. The band's combination of hardcore intensity and pop songcraft would win them a loyal following in the emerging underground scene of the mid to late 1980's. After 3 albums and four national tours, the band called it quits in 1990. Within weeks, Kaufmann pulled an about face and formed the Rolling Hayseeds with Kevin Karg. Before terms like alt.country were being thrown around, the Hayseeds quickly endeared themselves to a burgeoning roots rock scene with their straight-up honky tonk country. Two acclaimed albums on Record Cellar Records (Tangled up in you; No place like home) are still in print. His solo album, Common Senses, was released in 2002. Also released on Record Cellar, the disc pulled together many of the disparate influences Kaufmann had toyed with over the years. His excellent backing band, the Primo Carnera, featured the talents of A's leader Rocco Notte and producer, George Manney. FoxyContin, Kaufmann's latest endeavor, brings him full circle. The band's sound harkens back to groups that originally inspired him to pick up the guitar (Ramones, Stiff Little Fingers, Husker Du). The band is currently recording with producer Pierce Backes(Yarrows), and has a song on the just released Record Cellar box set.--------------------------------------
