About myself
I grew up in the La Mesa, California. I went to Grossmont High school and graduated in 1977. I grew up with two older brothers and an older sister. Yes I was the baby but only in age. We lived 5 doors away from a fire house.
In the sixth or seventh grade, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I was destining, for a pirate’s life or at least the next best thing, a firefighter.
In high school there were three kinds of students; Stoner, Surfers and Preppies. I, of course was a surfer. High school for me was both the best of times and the worse of times. For my first three years I was absolutely terrified of girls. I was picked on by a class bully and was the class clown. I am a 80 watt bulb out of a 100 watt pack.
My senior year was absolutely the best time of my life at that age. I started school at 8am and out by noon, then on the beach by 1pm. I don’t remember my first class but my second was PE and then civics.
A year after I graduated, I was hired by California Dept of Forestry as a seasonal firefighter. I joined the US Air Force in 1979 and was station at Pope Air force Base in North Carolina as a crash-fire-rescue specialist (firefighter).
In 1980 my oldest son was born, in 1982 my daughter was born, then in 1984 and 1986 my other two sons were born. After the Air Force, I accepted a job in South Carolina as a firefighter for the Boiling Spring FD in Greenville County. I climb to the rank of lieutenant.
After three years there, we moved to Durham, North Carolina and I accepted a job as a firefighter for the City of Durham, NC. I have been here for over 20 years and currently a Captain on Ladder (Truck) Company 2, (USAR NCTF-8). I have been the Professional Firefighter’s of Durham, IAFF Local 668, vice president, for the past six years.
I am a Man, free born. I choose to be saved and bowed my knee, to the Son of God, whom accepted me. I cannot tell you why things happen or even explain ones faith. What I can tell you; is that it works for me!
I have bear witness and seen the destructive nature of man, but I have also seen compassion, gentleness and kindheartedness of man. I am in no way perfect or better than you. My life is a struggle at times, but with family and friends; it is a blessing.
My family is most vital and essential part of my life. My new granddaughter at my young age is a great blessing. The miracle of birth is truly amazing.
I get emotional when I talk about my kids, my wife and the blessing that God has bestowed on me. I have the greatest Friends/Brother's in the world, that would come to my aide and gladly lay there lives down for mine, as I would do the same.
