The New Zealots

About Me

We are a three piece from Port Chalmers, Dunedin, New Zealand. We've been together as the New Zealots for 2 years but have all been playing together for 10 or so years and we know each other well. Our style of muzik has been called psychedelic alt country/CAN - a consequence of playing together for years (jammin) and a love of all things weird in this wonderful universe of ours. I write the songs (that make the....) and play guitar and bass amongst other things. Gavin plays lead and Todd drums and we all sing. The track "Moment of Revelation" came about from a story I wrote which was read by Ukrainian artist Alla Polozenko, the muzik inspired Alla to do the painting she titled 'Moment of Revelation' (the story was titled Revelations), i loved the painting and used it for the album cover on the CD and as inspiration for my "Moment"...Our friend and fellow zealot Ian Mckintosh took the awesome photos on this page - He's around here somewhere too (aplebeian.com) if you wanna see more.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxThe Lonesome Throats were the band that bred the New Zealots. The Throats terrorised Dunedin in the mid to late nineties. A 3 piece with legendary front man Dave Muir on vocals, guitar and impregnation, one legged bikerbassist Rob Lamb also doing vocals, guitar and arbitration and Gavin Shaw on vocals, drums and medication. The band was a true shining star for their well overdue 15 minutes and faded away like all good one nite stands do. Jon Spencer (not that one, however he would have approved) summed up one of their first gigs as 'country punk metal delic blues lounge distortion' which sizes them nicely. Their one and only album, recorded over the 14/16th August 1997, the 20th anniversary of Elvis leaving the building, was 'Cheurcher D'or' - a blistering 13 song, recorded in as long as it took to play, stand alone, masterpiece. Being the coldest day of the year in Dunedin and Paddy Ramone's Tailgator Studios not even having the requisite Dunedin one bar heater they wore fingerless gloves and big coats and hats, did morphine, marijuana and Milo and fired up the Loathsome Threat Shuffle. Their famous gig at the Freaks Ball on the West Coast was where they achieved cult status after playing for 3 hours thru a tiny p.a. valve amps glowing in the sweaty air, the gig being inside a 4 pole circus tent, up to their knees in mud with Gavin's stool slowly sinking and his drums vibrating around the wooden pallets gaps, surrounded by outrageous FREAKS, most of whom - well all really - had eaten the local mushrooms, smoked the local pot, drank the local brews and were dangerously overdressed for shin deep soggy soil - and seeing dracula and a lurching flax bush having sex in the mud with a pile of seaweed is a truly surreal sight - where the boys were paid in acid, pot and piss! and then drove for 12 hours thru the snow back to Dunners - And so - there's many other TLT stories/legends, while their lite shined they lived the rocknroll dream in a truly unique and kiwi fashion. Yeeha. Have a listen to The Lonesome Throats. The Mayor's Chair
