John Ashby was born in 1915 in Fauquier County, VA near the community of Conde. John began fiddling at an early age. In 1970, John was discovered by Richard Nevins, Charles Faurot and David Freeman of County Records. Soon after this, County released three albums by this wonderful fiddler and his band, the Free State Ramblers: Old Virginia Fiddling (1970), Down on Ashby's Farm (1974), and Fiddling by the Hearth (1979). Though John Ashby is gone, his music will live for generations to come.
