Mission Statement
The Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation, established in 1979, provides a resource for the extant choreography and technique of Isadora Duncan for dancers, performers, arts students and historians, educators, dance enthusiasts and the general public. The Foundation expands public awareness and understanding of Isadora Duncan as a world-famous performer and choreographer, innovator, feminist, educator, author and philosopher by
• presenting Duncan’s works and other outstanding pioneer Modern Dance works for public viewing;
• teaching Duncan’s technique and repertoire;
• promoting the creation of new works based upon Duncan’s dance technique, and
• producing film, video and multi-media projects focused on and emanating from Duncan’s life and work.
The Foundation has become an educational and sponsoring center networking the Duncan Dancers from the original schools of Isadora Duncan and her sister Elizabeth to the present day.
Lori Belilove, who serves as President, Artistic Director and Master Teacher of the Foundation, has trained and danced with first and second generation Duncan Dancers who themselves trained and performed with Ms. Duncan. Ms. Belilove’s direct lineage and prestigious performing background have won her the reputation as premiere interpreter of the dances of Isadora Duncan. Lori Belilove & Company is the resident performing troupe of the Foundation, which consists of five to nine dancers who have received years of training and private coaching in Duncan technique.
Performance Programs:
The resident company of the Isadora Dance Foundation is Lori Belilove & Company. The company performs the Duncan repertoire, from early jubilant works to later tragic solos. The all-female company of five to nine dancers, all with extensive training in the Duncan technique, present locally in public presentations, salon performances, and lecture demonstrations. They tour nationally and internationally, most recently to Brazil, Italy, and Russia (summer 2005), dancing both the Duncan repertoire and works inspired by Duncan’s philosophy and technique.
Education Programs:
The Educational Wing offers classes and workshops for children and adults ranging from beginner to professional, taught by Ms. Belilove and senior members of the Company. A Certification Program – indicating that the individual is qualified to teach the Duncan technique – involves a rigorous curriculum of 350 class hours, intensive workshops, learning, teaching and performing Duncan works, required readings, video and film research, mentoring and final project. Members of the Company also offer dance workshops at schools and universities, most recently residencies at Oakland University, Franklin & Marshall College, Chapman University, University of Florida, University of Alabama, and Mills College.
