Young Onassis is a humble artist new to the game. He has his own distinct sound which appeals to all. He has uses the slang of a southern rapper, has the punch line heavy delivery of an east coast battle rapper, yet he has rugged flow like most west coast rappers.
Young Onassis was born in Nigeria but moved to Arizona when he was about 1 year old. Growing up rap music wasn’t big in his house, yet he managed to sneak in the sounds of Wu Tang, Mobb Deep, and Nas at night as he fell asleep. It was then he grew fond of Rap and Hip-hop.
He didn’t start officially rapping until 8th grade. Even then he was only a freestyle artist, battling anybody who would step up to the plate at school, after church, or on the block. This is where he made a name for himself and practiced his flows. After gaining momentum and confidence in his skills, along with constant pressure from his fellow church members, Onassis formed a gospel rap group called Lyrical Prophets on New Years Eve 2005 where he first performed for his church. LP wasn’t a typical Christian group for they had a secular sound however their lyrics had Christian undertones.
Unfortunately, the group separated in early 2006 to pursue different paths although still affiliated with each other, similar to Outkast.
Once Onassis started taking rap seriously he began to take note of his older brother, Tzu Hefner, in the studio. He coupled the lessons learned there with his diligent study of classic Rap albums such as Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt, Nas’s I Am and Illmatic LPs and tapes of street battles by artists such as Murda Mook. Onassis soaked up the various deliveries and methods of spitting as he fell asleep each night to the sounds of “If I Ruled the World,†“Hate me Now,†“Money, Power, Respect,†and a Jay-Z classic “Feeling It.â€
Young Onassis is now in the studio perfecting his sound and delivery while attempting to produce a single for the radio. He’s a down to earth guy who is fun to work with and takes his work seriously. He is willing to collaborate with any artist of any genre.
