Nikki is from North Dakota, a far cry from the big city which she now calls home. She lived in Minneapolis while going to Fashion School, then drove a truck with all her stuff to Chelsea where she moved with her pig and kitten.
Maayan was born in Israel, but grew up for the most part in Vancouver, Canada. She lived in San Francisco and Alphabet City before moving to New York, where she now lives comfortably in a Brooklyn apartment with an eat-in kitchen and a walk-in closet.The two were introduced by their mutual friend Dimitri Ehrlich. Maayan met Dimitri at her cousin's wedding in 1996 and kept up with him until he got a girlfriend in late 2000. During the course of their friendship, he would insist she meet his friend's girlfriend "Nikki", who was also a lingerie designer. (We think he pictured us "all getting along"...and that he would find himself in the middle..what a coinkidink). Finally the 3 met up for burritos on 14th St in May of 2004. Within minutes the two lingerie girls became friends and told Mr. Ehrlich to go find some other friends to talk to, as they were going to take a walk.
Maayan and Nikki walked for a few blocks. When Nikki announced they were standing in front of her door, Maayan realized that her old friend Derek used to live in the same building. Lo and behold, Nikki was now living in Derek's vacant apartment. So Nik gave Maayan his old mail to hand off, and the rest is history!
Except for that they also ended up talking about Britney's comeback for like 2 hrs on the sidewalk.Next installment: Design Retreat, Sept.04.
