Beat the Press formed in May 1988 and was based in Pompano Beach Florida. They had a rehearsal space on Dixie Highway in a warehouse near the Goodyear Blimp hangar. After several months of rehearsals, the group debuted at the Reunion Room in Ft. Lauderdale Florida to a packed house. They later enjoyed some success playing at the Sunrise Musical Theater along with UB-40 and The Violent Fems. Other notable shows included with the Dead Milkmen at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and with Greg Allman in Coconut Grove.
The band recorded several songs and released cassette tapes that were available at Uncle Sams Music and at their shows.
The band participated in the first Miami Rocks showcase at Woody's on the Beach in Miami.
The band had several songs in regular rotation on 88.5 WKPX, WDNA Miami and WVUM at the University of Miami.
