So, Soulwax are the shouty punky rock band brought to you by some Belgian dudes otherwise known as 2ManyDJs. Their DJ sets take in a lot of guitar music, but are generally led by a backbone of electronic dance music. Soulwax is certainly more about straight up rock. Soulwax Nite Versions however, is like Soulwax being remixed by 2ManyDJs, with their dance hat on. If you follow. As the group’s website tells us, “Nite Versions is an album [and now a live act] that reinterprets and reworks tracks taken mostly from Soulwax’s ‘Any Minute Now’ (LP) and twists them in homage to the extended 12†format…Soulwax have made something that’s referential to the whole notion of the 12†single, from Blue Monday, French Kiss or Pigbag to the present day and like minded people and friends like Tiga, DFA and Gomma.†It’s very dirty stuff – with gnarled, brooding basslines, crashing drums and cymbals and urgent vocals just like in the original material. So much more enjoyable than straight-up Soulwax – it’s truly the perfect matching of rock and dance.
