Over two hundred years ago, December 24, 1799 to be exact, a young woman named Raina was born to Joshua and Mikalia Oakins, in a small village outside of what is now Chicago. She grew up a normal, happy child, full of dreams to see the world. Shortly before her nineteenth birthday, her life took a drastic turn.
All her life, she was taught to be careful. No walking alone after dark, no talking with strangers. She had taken a job at a local pub when she turned 18. She liked the job, and the people liked her. She made good money and was looking forward to moving out on her own.
Walking home after work one night, a routine she had followed for months, she was pulled into an alley and attacked. She never saw the face of her attacker. All she saw was blackness, and she felt a sharp piercing pain at her neck. All she heard was the beating of her own heart, get louder and faster, then finally slow to a stop. She felt the life drain from her body as she went limp.
She woke up in a different place. Everything felt different. She felt different. Opening her eyes, she found herself focusing on a beautiful young woman, who immediately left the room. A little while later, a pale, good looking man walked in. His name was Parker, he explained. He was her sire.
After the initial shock wore off, she spoke, her voice shaky at first. She needed an explanation. She didn't understand what he was telling her. He explained to her that he had given her the gift of eternal life. He had made her a vampire.
She sat in silence for a long time, trying to hear, or feel, her heartbeat, even once more. No matter what she did, there was nothing left to feel.
She stayed with Parker, learning from him, being by his side. They became lovers, spending days, and weeks, at a time, doing nothing but each other. They fit together perfectly, and he filled that void in her.
They were hunting one night and they were ambushed, by a group of eager slayers. She was badly injured and Parker, her lover and partner, was killed, leaving her alone once again.
Angry at her fate, she left what had become her home, wandering for years, decades, looking for peace. Her anger consummed her, making her feel even more hollow then she was.
She surrounded herself with lackeys she had sired, trying to fill the void. Still not at peace, she took her anger out on those around her, driving them away, leaving her alone again. Somewhere in the night, she met a man, who gave her a gift. She was only to use this gift if she had no other choice. His gift to her? The ability to start fires, by just thinking about it.
In the year 1902, Raina saved the life of a young girl who was being attacked in an alley. Tearing the man's throat out, to be exact. It was then, she decided to sire the young woman. Her name was Sera Trevors. Sera stayed with her for a few years, learning the tricks of the trade. And becoming very good at it. In 1908, Sera sired her sister, Eva. They have been inseparable.
The life she lives now is much different from anything she ever imagined it could be. Sometimes, a life of immortality is not everything it is cracked up to be.
She longs for a life of her own. A life in which she can walk in the sun again. A life of happiness, marriage and children. Something she will never experience.
She walks this life alone, wishing things were very different. Wishing she were normal again. Then, there are the days in which she enjoys her life. The hunting, the game. The survival.
It's on those days she smiles. The scent of her prey. The scent of blood, the stench of fear. Erotic sometimes. Passion, flowing through her veins. Her heart almost beating again, if only for a split second.
