About Me

Josh Deutsch is a trumpet player and composer heralding from Seattle, Washington. Starting piano at age 5, Josh went on to play trumpet in the award winning jazz ensembles and orchestras at Washington Middle and Garfield High School, also composing for these ensembles, as well as the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.
In 2000, Josh moved to Boston, Massachusetts to pursue a degree in Jazz Studies at the New England Conservatory of Music. There, he studied improvisation privately with Danilo Perez, Bob Brookmeyer, John McNeil and Allan Chase, and composition with Lee Hyla. Josh was also invited to attend the Banff International Jazz Workshop in the summers of 2001, 2003 and 2004, where he worked with such musicians as Dave Douglas, Bill Frisell, Kenny Werner and Jim Black.
In 2006, Josh received a Graduate Teaching Fellowship from the University of Oregon. There he has studied trumpet with Brian McWhorter, and worked closely with jazz faculty members Steve Owen and Toby Koenigsberg. In Eugene, Josh maintains an active teaching and performing schedule, playing with such groups as the Oregon Jazz Ensemble, the Emerald City Jazz Kings, and the Poisonous Birds, which he leads. Josh is increasingly sought as a clinician and educator, and has taught private students and ensembles at both the University of Oregon and the Shedd Institute for the Arts, as well as giving masterclasses and clinics throughout the state of Oregon. He has been on the faculty of the University of Oregon Summer Jazz Camp and the Oregon Festival of American Music’s summer Jazz Camp since 2007.
Josh has travelled extensively as a performer, including visits to Japan, Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Canada. In addition to projects in Eugene, Josh is a founding member and co-leader of the group Four Across, along with fellow New England Conservatory alumni Carmen Staaf, Kendall Eddy and Brian Adler. The group’s debut CD was released in March of 2008.
Josh was named winner of the College soloist award in Downbeat's 2008 Student Music Awards, as well as Outstanding trumpet soloist at the 2008 Reno International Jazz Festival.
