UC IRVINE HISTORY
Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc.-Theta Alpha chapter was founded with the vision of being the organization that would bridge the gap between Latinos at UCI and the rest of the campus community. Through the principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, Community Service and Cultural Awareness the Brothers of the Sigma Lambda Beta-Theta Alpha chapter have lead the way in exposing the Latino culture and its contributions to American society and the UCI campus. Sigma Lambda Beta is the first Latino base Greek Letter organization to have been established at the University of California Irvine campus.
As the Fall Quarter of 1995 began, meetings were held at UC Irvine to establish an interest group. With the help of Bros. Douglas Vasquez and Cesar Figeroa , Tau chapter initiated Brothers, the task to found the second establishment of Sigma Lambda Beta in California was commenced. The following months were a period of hard work, but through true effort and determination the gentlemen that made up the interest group were able to accomplish many achievements. At the end of the Fall of 1995, the necessary requirements to become a Sigma Lambda Beta Colony were met and in the Winter Quarter of 1995-1996, the interest group was formally recognized by the International Board.
On May 18, 1996, seven men ended their journey and became Brothers of the honorable Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. The Theta Alpha Chapter Founding Brothers are: Bro. Ricardo Hernandez, Bro. Francisco Duran, Bro. Benjamin Aguillon, Bro. Frank Marquez, Bro. Fausto Flores Jr., Bro. Armando Lopez, and Bro. Alberto Mora.
Since 1996, Sigma Lambda Beta has taken an active roll in the Inter-Fraternal Council at UCI and in Mesa Unida, the umbrella organization at UCI for Latino organizations. Sigma Lambda Beta-Theta Alpha Chapter is one of the of the organizations that have influenced and led the way for Latino based Greek letters organizations on the UCI campus.
