About Me

KHRISTIAN K – Biography
Born originally as Krisztian Kiss in Szolnok, in the early morning hours on April 18th, 1980, on a Friday, which promised to become a really fine day. Even as a child it was obvious that he could not remain put, he was interested in everything beautiful, he wanted to get to know everything and he wanted to do so immediately. Most of his free time was occupied by sports (cross country running, basketball, aikido) in his early youth but later on he became interested in the fine arts - mostly in drawing and graphics. As he got to know later on, the style he applied from his earliest drawings on was bearing some minimalist and cubistic features already.
/Instead of playing football in the playground with the other „proper” children he was constantly drawing - either at home or at some outside location. Because of this he turned quite reserved really soon finding his way out only later on through music./
His interest in music took a turn towards electronic music very early as by the age of 14 he was already listening to Depeche Mode, Bonanza Banzai, Kraftwerk, Art of Noise, Future Breeze and Ultrasonic, and as part of his parental heritage also to a well organized collection of Dire Straits, Bob Dylan, Duke Ellington, Gershwin, Air, Louis Armstrong, Donna Summer or even Vangelis.
The first attempt at mixing happened when he was 15: with his father’s brand new Goldstar Hi-fi set and a Tesla record player he mixed Ultrasonic on Neoton Familia. He realized in these long trial periods of mixing how much positive energy is released by this intermixture of sounds. He also realized while he became free and vibrated above the loudspeakers that he was only waiting for open minded individuals whom he could present with a little bit of positive energy, euphoric happiness and a new point of view. He had to realize that this artisanship was a far more complex, whole way of transmitting information allowing a much greater freedom than simply drawing a picture. Only a diminishing percentage of pictures are considered a piece of art bearing a distinct message and content. And also the process itself - that is the viewing of pictures - is burdened with conventions and rules and is essentially an inconvenient and boring act. Mixing was something different: he got to know a completely new way of improvisation only based on the moment, concentrating on the present, its future only predictable until the next disc.
In a physical sense it is intangible and unreachable but it is still a much more human and self-expressive way of presentation, which does not only fill you with energy but it also makes you move and guides you, even entertains you. He found himself a relatively broad spectre of opportunities in the new electronic dance music – that means he got „infested”.
The beginning
By the age of 14 he had already started going to parties: he did not do so for the conventional reasons – he did not want to dance or amuse himself but wanted to listen to music, get to know the new trends and watch the big ones do it. He started his career as DJ Khris[c] with 16 at the (only) disco of his hometown: turning into a teen DJ every Friday night in the early summer of 1996 in The Moment Club. He worked here until 1998 – but by this time he was already playing early techno in the “rave arena” room: Emanuel Top, Underground Resistance, Axis és Purpouse Maker editions, Pascal FEOS, Planettary Assault System, Jeff Mills, Der Dritte Raum, Misjah, Advent, Adam Beyer, Thomas and other European, Swedish and Detroit masterpieces.
1999 – khris grown
He moved to Budapest in 1999 and with the help of a friend he started to play in the only (now legendary) techno club of the city – the favourite of Sven Väth, the Supersonic Technicum. He founded the Shedwick Team in 2000 and started the organization of events built on his own concept: intelligent techno music from young, upstart, highly mix-sensitive and presentation-oriented DJ s with a friendly audience in the well-known and safe club surrounding.
A period termed “ripening” by him followed in his musical life. Slowly the Japanese and Detroitian mathematically meticulous disappeared and gave way to darker and fatter English and European techno music: to early Glenn Wilson, Chris Liebing, Speedy J, Chris Cowie, Slobodan, Headroom, Hardcell, Devilfish, PGV, Marco Carola, G-Force, Geatek, Brittish Murder Boys and a lot of others. The newly acquired adulthood was emphasized by a new name: from Khris[c] he changed his name to Khris Grown.
After this he was allowed to play at almost every underground and not-so-underground place in Budapest – like Fáklya, Sonic, Neo Café, Rage, Livingroom, Desperados, E-Play, Blade Café, Meduza, Fekete Lyuk, Citadella, P3, Rocktogon, Paradox Café…
2002
By 2002, the simple act of playing music gradually turned into his making his own music: in the beginning he only experimented with dark, energetic techno in Fruityloops. The software and its potential fascinated him so much that from 2004 till 2006 all his time was occupied with making music or rather with getting to know the software.
2006 – khristian k
His style became more refined with the passing of time: he started to challenge the limits of techno music and its more musical side. This new approach was emphasized by a new name – from Khris Grown he changes his name to khristian k. This new name corresponds to his newly found style. He can be found behind the DJ table again in this summer as the resident of an interesting series: the Wavebreaker Night. An old dream becomes reality when he is allowed to broadcast his online radio show – Think That! The minimal, deep, and tech is a bit contradictory on the first Hungarian trance transmitter but it workes out!
His music? The new sound is organized, energetic but dark, and motivating. Only a few names: Minilogue, Loco Dice, Alex Under, James Holden, Matthias Tanzmann, Trentemöller, Agaric, Paul Kalkbrenner, Booka Shade, Agoria, Alex Smoke, Extrawelt, Terry Lee Brown Jr, SCSI 9, Adam Beyer, Thomas Schumacher, Patrick Chadronnet, Martin Buttrich, Sascha Funke..
2007
Quietly, he also tries his luck as a producer: it seems that a long awaited breakthrough arrives in the fall of 2007 as two of his Eps are published: one (Eastside EP) with the help of a Hungarian label, at the Positron Records and the other remix is published by on Beatport! ...
