ABOUT THE MAKING OF DISINTRGRATION...
During the summer break, ( After "kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me" )which Robert inserted to 'escape' the band, he picked out his own creations, to now rework them with the others to a new album. It should become a slow record with an emotional central theme. But the work with Lol becomes unbearable - he nearly doesn't put a step into the studio and is drunken all the time. Finally Porl doesn't want to go on tour, and Simon would even leave the band, if Lol wouldn't leave. Some days before Christmas, a party for the completion of 'Disintegration' takes place, and Lol gets his bill. Robert: "It was the first time he heard the songs, I think, and he didn't like them - 'cause he didn't play on any of them. But he still was willing to take his money and go on tour." Robert's letter, which explains his chucking out, is never replied to.After the waves calmed down, 'Lullaby' / 'Babble' / 'Out Of Mind' is released. The press loves the song, and the appearance at 'Top Of The Pops' is inevitable - although the producer thinks the look of the band had a bad influence on children! Finally he gives in, and Robert tells the Melody Maker: "At least we still frighten people. That has to be a good sign!" In May the time has come for 'Disintegration', built up to No. 3 in the charts, and the monumental 'Prayer Tour'.The Loreley-Festival becomes a contest in drinking between The Cure and The Mission - Wayne Hussey lays down disoriented but victorious. Robert is especially impressed by the Hungarians: "I thought we'd never sold records there, and though the audience sang along with every song... they can't have understood what they sing!" He spreads that this tour would be the last, which was the reason why it was special fun for him - he counted the hours he'd left spending on stage. At the end of the european leg of the tour, the three concerts in the Wembley-Arena are recorded for future publication. While the band is travelling to america via ship because of Robert's and Simon's fear of flying, 'Love Song' / '2 Late' / 'Fear Of Ghosts' is released. In the USA, only Janet Jackson keeps the song away from No. 1. Back in England, the Melody Maker votes 'Disintegration' as the album of the year, and asks Robert for the best things of the eighties; among others "anti-nuclear power and environmental protection, the Voyager-probes, PC-adventures, New Order, E.T. ... to be in The Cure. Surviving..." and the worst: "Afghanistan, Northern Ireland, the death of important people, the surviving of others..."While the band is recovering, 'Pictures Of You' / 'Last Dance' is released, which Robert explains: "I lost the pictures I always carried with me in my purse...", and to the video with palms in snow: "Snow looks like sand in black and white. The old proverb 'Pictures don't lie' isn't true." For the summer some festival- appearances are announced: "I never said we wouldn't play live anymore. 5 or 6 concerts in some weeks is completely different from not coming home for months." Short time before the first, not announced gig in France, Roger O'Donnell leaves the band for unknown reasons. That's the chance for Cure's long time guitar-technician Perry Bamonte, who stands in immediately.(BORROWED FROM CURIOSITY - THE CURE ANOMALIES)
