About Me

Robert Ciolfi is a Toronto based photographer who has been slugging around a camera since he picked up his first Pentax K1000 in high school. In 2003 he started Quietlife Photography as a much needed respite from his accounting day job – Robert is a professional accountant by training. (He can take your portrait and do your taxes all in one day – separate fees apply!) Quietlife focuses mainly on portrait photography but has grown to include event photography for a number of larger corporate clients. His camera has taken him to photograph events in Rome, Costa Rica, Cancun and most recently to Portugal. While in Portugal, Robert came across a Hasselblad on a tripod aimed toward the picturesque town of Sintra - the photographer was sitting 20 meters away looking at the scene. When asked what he was doing, the photographer replied he was “waiting for the sun”. Two hours later, Robert passed the photographer again – he was still waiting for the sun.Over the last couple of years Robert has begun photographing the local music scene in Toronto. Driven by a thirst for new music, he seeks out bands - checks them out with camera in tow. This has lead to his photos being used in various mediums – both in print and on the web. Most recently, Robert has photographed the Toronto based band The Tenth Planet. His photo appears on the bands’ latest release “Everything is Never Over”. You can also find his photos on CD’s by Lily Frost and Jason Kent to name a few. There are many photographers who inspire Robert; his main inspiration comes from the work of Anton Corbijn (U2, Depeche Mode, The Killers etc). Much of Corbijn’s work is done in a simple manner – camera in hand, without the luxury of perfect lighting or in many cases, no additional lighting at all. Corbijn is able to capture the spirit of his subject – he seems to pull it out of their superstar personas.Robert describes “the fine line between releasing, or waiting to release the shutter. A split second can make the difference between a good photograph and a great photograph”. In his own way, Robert is also “waiting for the sun”Get in touch with me if your are interested in having some photos taken of your band - visit www.flickr.com/photos/robertciolfi/ for more music related photography and www.quietlifephotography.ca to see more portrait related photography.
