About Me

Some people say I was raised by wolves. That's a lie. Some people say I was raised by coyotes. That's a damned lie.Others say I was raised by a lady cougar. That's statistics.Actually, folks, I was born on Mars and I got to Texas as soon as I could...I've been playing piano since 1955, guitar and harmonica, and in and out of bands since 1963 or so. Also writing songs. Since 1995 or so, I've also tried my hand at serious composition. I got tired of bands and bars. The East/West fusion thing is the latest manifestation of a long evolutionary process. The band is a KORG Triton. The studio is a Mac G5.All music, text, and images are copyright 2006, 2007, Mickey White, unless otherwise noted.

Influences: "Semuta" is inspired by Frank Herbert's Dune novels. It is also my name for this musical style. The World Orchestra consists of: a reggae quartet of organ, bass, guitar, and drums; a gamelan section with gong, timpani, and two xylophone sections; a North Indian quartet with tabla, tambura, sitar, and a Western flute; two female choruses; and two violin sections. The music is based on a fusion of Western and South Indian music theories, in particular, the melakarta system. I might describe it as Bob Marley meets Phillip Glass meets Steve Winwood meets Ravi Shankar. It is intended to be both danceable and enviromental. It also incorporates brain wave frequencies and the emotional waveforms described by Manfred Clynes. It has hocketting patterns at three diferent time scales: usually eighth notes in the xylophones, quarter notes in the violins, and half notes in the choruses. The organ solo is basically Dorian mode, (mela 22); other than the chromatic passage, it is improvised. The others are neoclassical orchestra."The Burning of the Brain" is inspired by Cordwainer Smith's short story of the same name. Athough this is written for a Westen classical orchestra, the scale is mela 33."The Dream Chamber" is inspired by a scene in Norman Spinrad's novel, ''The Void Captain's Tale'', which was inspired by the Cordwainer Smith story. Wheels within wheels. The scale is mela 9, or Neapolitan Minor.
