“One of the things I realized not long after coming to Louisville, was that there were so many really good bands and a hundred times more bands that seemed like they were just rehashing music that trickled down from other major cities like New York, LA, Chicago, or Seattle. So I began to look for people and music that supported a more regional sound. Well, when you ask yourself what Kentucky is famous for musically, the first answer is bluegrass. But as I got into listening to bluegrass here and there, I felt that so many contemporary bluegrass bands just stuck to a specific formula. That’s when I discovered that Kentucky used to be a haven for old time music that represented the varieties of different families and cultures across the state. What I liked about old time music was that songs were shared, and that one song could be made original by the diverse musicians who played it regularly, or if one musician had a tune stuck in his head then he’d just make up his own words and share them with whoever.
