About Me

Began playing in 1975 with various bands including AQUA (not the Barbie girl variety but actually a band obsessed with Gong featuring GRAHAM MASSEY (808 STATE, BITING TONGUES, TOOLSHED, HOMELIFE), GRAHAM CLARK (ISTHMUS, TOOLSHED, GONG), GARY MADELEY (CRISPY AMBULANCE) and ALAN HEMPSALL(CRISPY AMBULANCE, INNER SENSE).Other bands included DANNY AND THE DRESSMAKERS, THE ROARING 80'S and THE POST NATALS (with GRAHAM MASSEY).Graham and I disbanded the POST NATALS to join KEN HOLLINS, EDDIE SHERWOOD and HOWARD WALMSLEY, playing music to a screening of a film called BITING TONGUES. This soon became a band called BITING TONGUES playing what might be called post punk funk jazz.BITING TONGUES continued for a good number of years from 1979 until the mid-80's. I left in 1984. GRAHAM M set up 808 STATE.I went on to form INNER SENSE PERCUSSION ORCHESTRA in 1985 playing a mix of street samba, latin jazz and funk. We played outside Mark & Spencers in Manchester most Saturday mornings, honing our skills with 6 hour buskathons. We also toured UK and much of Europe relentlessly as well as collaborating with theatre, dance and circus groups on combined arts projects. Community arts and educational work became a big part of our work. My final project with them was a collaboration with Cornwall's KNEEHIGH THEATRE COMPANY in 1994 on the theatre equivalent of a silent film: "Ravenheart", our version of Bizet's "Carmen".This was my last INNER SENSE project and also the first of many projects with KNEEHIGH THEATRE. I moved to Cornwall later that year. I worked with KNEEHIGH on many shows, including, "Don Quixote", "Hell's Mouth", "The Riot", "The Women Who Threw the Day Away", "Ghost Nets" and "Mannel's Mango".In the middle of all this, I found time to work with GRAHAM MASSEY in 808 STATE, playing gigs in Europe, America, Brazil and the UK.For the last 6 years I've been running a music department at Plymouth College of F.E., enabling young music students to gain skills and knowledge with National and First Diplomas. You'll find many of their bands here on My Space.I've continued to keep myself up to date by taking part in various projects. Last year I worked with site-specific theatre company, WILD WORKS, on a version of the Orpheus and Eurodice myth called "Souterrain". Other recent work includes music for 'Nine Nights' with storyteller, VAYU NAIDU; percussion and drums for DENISE MARIE, DAUGHTERS OF ELVIN, LOUISE PARKER, BOMBRASSA, THREE DAFT MONKEYs and RADJEL.
