I currently reside in Oak Grove, Kentucky which lies in between somewhere and the middle of nowhere. It’s a place where the streetlights are actually streetlights… like there is an arm that comes off of the pole and dangling at the end of the arm is the light, which hangs over the middle of the street. I guess in Kentucky they truly appreciate the element of surprise and would rather not see that deer coming! Also in this lovely town called Oak Grove you’ll admire Amish road signs, although I have yet to actually see any Amish traveling the roads, but as a side note - I did spot some at Ryan’s and I think they were driven there by an automobile! I knew they’d come around. Okay all joking aside, this place really does seem like it’s in the middle of nowhere, but it is home now, and “when in Rome…†you wake up at the butt crack of dawn because people that live here abuse their children and make them wake up at 5 a.m. so they can ride the bus to their school which starts at 7:15 a.m. and is a good 15-20 minutes away.
Oh yeah, I am a happily married mother of two who is studying to become a R.N.
It has been brought to my attention that I no longer can claim residence in Oak Grove. Yes it’s true; I no longer live in the lovely, ‘picturesque’ town of Oak Grove. I moved down the street to Fort Campbell. I’d say the main differences between here and there are the guarded gates you have to go through to get to my house, the lack of Amish road signs, and the existence of normal streetlights that I had become accustomed to while being reared in Wyandotte County. And although it’s not quite the same as home in KCK, the daily reminder of the ‘looming threat’, as evidenced by the presence of the guards, has made me feel more at home.
