Please pray for my brother16-year-old Antioch boy critical after shooting By Roman Gokhman Contra Costa TimesArticle Launched: 09/19/2008 04:45:27 PM PDT Sep 18: Teen shot in Antioch field ANTIOCH — A 16-year-old boy was in critical condition Friday after being shot twice in what police say was a robbery attempt in an empty field near a shopping center. Investigators said the boy was shot once in the arm and once in the back after he tried to escape from the robber or robbers. "We don't know if the robbery actually occurred because he can't talk to us right now," Antioch police Lt. Don LaDue said. The boy was in critical condition in a local hospital Friday afternoon. "He is in a medically-induced coma and won't be awakened until (Saturday) or Sunday," said the boy's father, Joseph Perez. The shooting occurred about 5:15 p.m. Thursday near Knoll Park, in the northwest corner of a field between a Wal-Mart and Orchard Supply Hardware on Lone Tree Way. The boy was walking on or near a trail at the time. Perez told police his son was cutting through Knoll Park on his way to Wal-Mart to buy cat food. "I sent him there on an errand," Perez said. "All he had on him was an MP3 player and $3 cash. When he was taken to the hospital, the MP3 player was gone. "Perez said he found out his son was injured when he received a phone call from a passerby whom the boy gave his home number to after he had been shot. Another man who was nearby told Perez that he saw two teens or young adults pedaling away on bicycles after the shooting. Investigators had not identified any suspects, LaDue said.
