23 year old Natalie John aspires to develop her voice through her own compositions and challenge the standards of jazz singing. Through several projects she's helping keep the new music flowing as we make our way through the 21st century, and luckily New York there is seemingly no end to the talent and art to draw upon for inspiration.
She created the Natalie John Quartet in 2007, which is composed of her then-classmates at the New School for Jazz in NYC's Greenwich Village. The band consists of a core rhythm section: Dominic Fallacaro ..boards, Maeve Royce on bass, and Stu Bidwell on drums. As the arrangements have grown, larger ensembles have formed which have at times included other musical peers like Travis Reuter (guitar), Mike McGarril (alto sax), Masa Yamamoto (alto and soprano sax), and fellow singers Becca Stevens and Julia Tepper.
The group has been playing all around Manhattan and Brooklyn at such venues as the 55 Bar, Zinc Bar, Sweet Rhythm, Spike Hill, Rose Live Music, Cachaca, and others. They plan on a debut album of original music set to drop in the first half of 2009.
Natalie also writes, performs and arranges for several other NYC-based groups: KT Chauvot's Collective Pursuit (8-piece ensemble playing original contemporary music); Marty Isenberg Big Band (playing originals and cool arrangements of standards); Joe Abba and Travis Sullivan's Identity Crisis (original funky soul and some covers).
She has also performed with Rachel Z's Department of Good and Evil, Travis Sullivan's Bjorkestra, and the Tyler Schwartz Group.
She is available for booking and performs in an array of formats, including as a jazz vocalist with accompaniment for formal events. Also, she is available for copy work/transcriptions as well as contracted lyricist and arranger. Just write to: [email protected]
