I'd love to meet Man O' War, my grandpa.
Here's some more about me...
My name is Seabiscuit. I am a dung-colored bay throughbred horse. I am stocky with a scraggy tail, and legs that do not quite straighten. I was an underdog, sneered at by smart East Coast race-goers, and I became not only a champion horse, but a working man’s hero, in a time of great economic strife.
I struggled my way through the minor league races and didn't get far. Things really first began for me when Tom Smith, a silent, West coast trainer, and a failing jockey, Red Pollard, saw somthing in me. As an undistinguished jockey, Pollard had always had to ride the difficult or mistreated mount. He and I were a great team, and together we became unstoppable overnight winners, winning race after race.
Seizing on any chance to escape the grim realities of the Depression, the American nation took your's truly into their hearts, and I became a national obsession, a symbol for the struggle of poor against the oppression of the rich.
In 1938, I raced against the long-limbed Triple-Crown winner, War Admiral, a favourite of the well-to-do racing society. The nation was obsessed by the pre-race publicity, and 40,000 supporters crammed the tiny racetrack for the Pimlico Special. When I darted over the finish line 4 lengths ahead of War Admiral, pandemonium broke out.
Over the years, I suffered numerous leg injuries, as did my jockey, and we had to stop racing for a long while. In 1939, when we stepped out to try and win the elusive Santa Anita Handicap, Red joked “Old Pops and I have four good legs between us, maybe that's enough.â€
It was: I ran the second fastest mile and a quarter in American history. Both of us were exhausted and, having won 437,000 in prize money, we retired. I supposedly died of a heart attack at 14 and am thought to be buried at Ridgewood Ranch under an oak tree. Actually, I faked my own death to avoid the pestering fans, moved back to my birthplace in Paris, Kentucky, and decided to start up this blog just so those of you could know I'm still alive an kickin'! Litterly!
