Grandaddy Youth was formed in January of 2001 when Taylor asked his pops to join him and two of his friends for a benefit performance in Ojai, California. That night the song Because Of You was written. Steve & Taylor Fulton, the aforementioned father and son, are Bass and Drums respectively (Steve also sings). John DeYoung (Guitar, Bass & Lead Vocals) and Steve played music around the area of Ventura, California for many years beginning in 1974, including several years with The Pleasure Dots, thus the “old” friends. Young friends Taylor & Eric Urbano (Lead & Rhythm Guitar) have known each other since they were kids, and neighbors. Our hybrid member, Andrew Diaz Jr. (Percussion & comedy, old & young), worked with John for several years before joining Grandaddy Youth. Most recently 19 year old Kevin Klien became the sixth member to join bringing his youthfull energy to the group and making a needed addition with his instrument. Kevin is a self taught musician learning the keyboard on his own.
Early performances include the Surf Rodeo, actually performed on Pierpont Beach in Ventura, and a concert at Victoria Hall, opening for Jack Johnson in Santa Barbara, California. In addition, repeated performances have included Nicholby's Night Club, the now non-existent Bubba's Lounge, both in Ventura, and the SLO Brewing Co. in San Luis Obispo, California (really good beer!).
Just for the sake of information, the name of the band was created by the young people when Steve insisted that the boys make up a band name, and suggested they come up with something funny. Needless to say, Steve, who is not a granddaddy, did not find this amusing (at the time he was the only old guy in the band).
The cool thing about this collection of people, and songs, is the numerous influences that have affected all of us. When we are asked what style of music do we play, we are hard pressed to call it any kind of style at all, other than our own. We have all been lucky enough to appreciate so many musicians from so many different styles that we can't help but play them all.
