Welcome To The Madonna Defense Team
This is a page for Madonna fans who believe that much of the scandal surrounding her adoption is based in close to no fact. This page is a place, I hope, for fans to discuss, through comments, what exactly happened. So much offered to the world about the adoption seems to have roots in opinion only. This is far from fair practice. It is my belief, that we must research before we speak, we must be able to explain an opinion with fact when dealing with this sensitive subject,
Human Rights activists have launched a lynch mob accusing Madonna, of what boils down to human trafficking. As if a major force in the entertainment business could easily get away with such an act.
Malawi has no real laws, they instead utilize tribal customs. Has Madonna followed all of these tribal customs? The answer is yes. She followed the custom of locating the birth father, meeting with him in court and discussing her intentions. David’s father decided this is what was best for his son, a decision none of us could understand.
This inability to understand this decision speaks volumes about the problems in Malawi, it explains the state of emergency. This is a country with a record high number of infant deaths, where the life expectancy is forty years old, this is not an established terrain. The fact that no one has EVER protested the tribal customs in this region before, makes me wonder why these supposed “human rights†activists are attempting to lynch Madonna.
In the blink of an eye, they have all decided to help Malawi. Only, it seems, because they are angry that a living legend adopted him. These people are complaining because Madonna bypassed the custom of moving to the country for 18 months. The reason she bypassed this custom is because she didn’t. Madonna & Guy were granted an interim adoption. Meaning, David can stay with them for 18 months, in which time a review will be offered and a decision made.
So anyone looking at this as a final adoption is quite ignorant, in my opinion. It just angers me that so many of the real facts are not being reported. However, I do believe in freedom of speech, so any fact based opinions are more than welcome.
Human rights organizations fear that Madonna (her money and power) will step in and do, with speed what they have been “trying†to accomplish for years. Money and power only hold value if they are used for good. In my opinion, anyone attempting to stop Madonna from using her money and power for good, are missing the point.
Strangely no one attacks Bono for his inflated sense of self. No one blinks when Aneglina and Brad adopt a child from Nigeria. None of this is questioned. The reason? No one cares as much what these people do, they do not sell papers because they are, more or less, well liked by all. They have not spent years courting controversy in the same manner Madonna has. These people are not popular piñatas, so attacking them holds now value. Even though Bono has met with the devil, George W, on many occasions. Still, nothing. The press claims him to be some sort of hero, we all know that his meeting fell on deaf ears. Hundred die in Iraq, the president doesn’t blink, the same emotion is applied to Africa. It’s not a US problem because there is nothing to be gained.
So what is the problem the press has with Madonna? Is it her seemingly eternal fame, her audacity to make positive changes in her own life, or is the fact that after years of claiming she cared of no one but herself, they turned out to be wrong? I bet if we looked into the closets of some of these “journalistsâ€, a truck load of skeletons would leap out at us. Must be nice to keep your good and bad deeds private.
What Madonna has learned, is the press is always willing to play marionette to her puppeteer. She knows that her good intentions to heal Malawi and care for David must come at the price we all have been reading about the past week. She has been through this circus before, and I truly doubt she internalizes any of which is written about her. She knows they way to bring Malawi to the public spotlight is to attach her name next to it. Turns out, she was right.
While the press continues to reflect their individual psychosis on to the pop star, she just continues to live. She goes to the gym, spends time with her family and above all else, continues on her mission to bring light where there was only dark. She knows the press will continue to question her motives, continue to print such vile commentary, she knows she must be a scapegoat in order to save the lives of millions.
Madonna is being punished for having both a successful career and personal life. She is being criticized for attempting to live the best life possible, perhaps these journalists are just a bit jealous that she has what they never really attempted to have. I guess losing your mother as a child, struggling for your dream and then living it is a crime. I assume that famous people should just be happy to have all that they have. I guess they should leave it at that.
I applaud Madonna for living her best life, for ignoring the negativity and for continuing to move towards light. I sound trumpets for what she is doing for Malawi and for the life of young David. I refuse to give into the jealousy and hate for that is what makes this world such an awful place.
Just know this I Myself, along with millions of others, will continue to support her as an artist and as a human. So continue to write, dear members of the press, you are an important part of helping her achieve her goals. You will be writing for years to come, and we, her fans, will be there every step of the way, offering support for a woman who has not only entertained us, but enlightened as well.
With Love

A Few Facts About Malawi
Life expectancy in Malawi is now as low as 36.5 years; five years lower than it was 50 years ago. This drop is due to the population's impoverishment, which is constituted by many factors, including:
low income (the mean per capita income in Malawi is less than $1 per day)
Major Issues:
insufficient nutrition, poor access to medical treatment
insufficient school education ,spread of HIV/AIDS, government economic restrictions
Child mortality is 103/1,000. There are more than a million orphans, 700,000 of whom became orphans when their parents died of AIDS.
According to Malawi government estimates, 14.2% of the population are HIV-positive, and 90,000 deaths in 2003 were due to AIDS. Unofficial estimates based on private hospital entries give a HIV infection percentage of 30%.
Malawi's staple food is maize but like other countries in Southern Africa, Malawi has repeatedly been affected by famines since 2002, when food was scarce for almost one third of the population. In 2003, 30 percent of the population were affected.
According to a FAO report from June 2005, 4.22 million inhabitants of Malawi, ¼ of the population, would not have enough food in 2005 to survive. In the south of the country, the rate of the population affected will be between 55 and 76 per cent. In the end of November 2005, the first famine deaths were recorded.
These repeated famines are caused by different factors including:
widespread monocultures, poor distribution of fertilizers
droughts , widespread AIDS epidemic, bilharzia, malaria
government corruption and restrictions on economic freedom
Some relief organisations, such as the Community of Sant'Egidio, Catholic Relief Services and other local and international organisations try to respond to the famine by distributing food parcels.
The government also had a starter pack farm input programme for maize seed and fertilizer. The scheme was however subject to gross abuses and sometimes the poorest people did not receive any of the items that were purportedly earmarked for them. This programme was discontinued by the Bingu Wa Muntharika administration, which instead subsidised fertilizer for the local subsistence farmers.
