Everything.
I like to learn as much as I possibly can so I read a lot and try to keep my eyes and ears open. As a result I have a lot of useful skills. I think I could be pretty handy in a post-apocalyptic scenario. Barring that, I can contribute to conversation on a panoply of disparate subjects.
I love playing drums. My band, Fangs of the Panda will rock your fucking face off. Ben plays bass and Mike and Sam play guitar. We do 2 things: rattle bush and crack nuts.
You can also hear me display the softer side of my drumming in Local Honey . It's a sort of understated version my normal racket.
Also: building/fixing/taking things apart, politics, biking, driving, nature, backpacking/camping, arabic drumming, shooting, cooking, science/technology and, again, pretty much everything else.
People who enjoy learning stuff for no good reason.
Also seafarers and antarctic explorers.
I'll give anything a chance.
- The Clash, TMBG, Billy Bragg, The Ramones, The Misfits, Elvis Costello, AC/DC, The Cure, Toots and the Maytals, Duran Duran, Gito Gito Hustler, Telefonics, etc, etc.
Gotta Love the locals: Styles for Modern Living, Harangue, Isha&Zetta, Maxi-Pads, Satanic Bat, El Grosso, My Sexiest Mistake, Magic Wolf, the Human Brains, Pay Toilets, Modey Lemon, all the Rickety Bands... and the ex-locals, Ludus Lovestyle, Scott Carney...
Oh, and, yes:
some favs include; Indiana Jones, Alien/Aliens etc., Rushmore, Return of the Living Dead, Stalingrad, Midnight Run. I enjoy quality horror (i.e. has atmosphere, not just blood).
Post-apocalyptic and/or dystopian films have always been favorites. Recent films I've enjoyed in that vein -Children of Men and V for Vendetta.
Also love Japanese and Hong Kong films as well as documentaries of all sorts.
Everybody should check out Twins Effect (aka Vampire Effect) -a fairly recent example of why Hong Kong films rule; and also Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior and The Protector -proof that Thai films are not gonna let HK get lazy any time soon.
Trailer Park Boys!! The Prisoner, The Simpsons, The Office (US), Arrested Development
I read a lot. Basically, if it's printed on something, I'll read it. It's true. I pick up product information sheets, user manuals, brochures and pamphlets -all kinds of shit.
But, I LOVE BOOKS most of all!
A couple of my all time favorites: H.P. Lovecraft, Poe, Nabokov, Vonnegut, Kerouac, David Sedaris, H.G. Wells, Nicholson Baker, Walt Whitman and James Joyce.
I highly recommend Letters to a Young Contrarian by Christopher Hitchens -a total classic for people like me, who can't leave an ill-considered statement unchallenged.
I'm always looking for good recommendations (I will actually check them out).
Currently (or recently) Reading:
Recently I was able to spend a little (but not nearly enough) time looking through my Grandfather's collection of books as they lay randomly piled in his basement. It will suffice to say that my mind was blown. I love old books!
Eugene Debs, Leonardo Da Vinci and Indiana Jones.
My grandfather, George E. Yohe, died last summer. When I was young he taught me the value of curiosity. It was the greatest gift I ever received.
