BIOGRAPHY
Many things happen in life that are truly unexplanatory, and others coincidental. The truth is sometimes not what we expect, or find hard to accept. Artist Flu Smif has lived a life full of heartache and doubt, much like other hard-lived people in Detroit, Michigan. Flu Smif was born on Detroit's east side to an unhappy, dead beat father, and a very proud and faithful mother. The abusive and controlling relationship between Flu's mother and father became too overwhelming for his mother. With little money and food, she took baby Flu and his toddler sister out of that environment, and moved to a government housing complex on the lower east side to raise her children.
As a child, Flu Smif was constantly surrounded with music. His mother would play oldies music every morning before going to work at a women's boutique that she owned, and opened with a personal loan the year young Flu was born in 1988. The boutique would be the place where Flu would learn the ins-and-out of being an entrepreneur, and directly from his mother. He grew up around the business, everyday watching people spend thousands of dollars at a time in his mothers store. He quickly learned how a boss operates, and most importantly, how to make money.
When Flu's mother got remarried, as a child he wasn't ready for the change. He now had two older step-brothers, who would later introduce Flu to things he would take great interest in. Life after the marriage was much different. Flu along with his mother and sister moved to Oak Park, MI, a small suburb a mile outside of Detroit. Here is where he would be introduced to two things that would play an important role in his life... hustling and music. From age 5-10, Flu found and learned about all kinds of things. He would constantly come across guns and narcotics while curiously searching though his older brother's stuff. Consequently, his curiosity would later catch up with him.
Flu's interaction with law enforcement has never been cordial. His first encounter with the police came at age 11, where Flu was unlawfully interrogated by police, with no one but he and two white cops present. They questioned him about the vandalism of some county officials and police cars. They used manipulative, and fearful tactics to try to break him. To no avail, they got nothing out of him and he was released. He learned much from this experience, but it was surely not the last of its kind.
Flu's mother got him first involved in music at age 12. She encouraged him to audition for the middle school band, and bought him a used gold saxophone. After making the band, he was taught many important things about music. Before, only knowing what music he liked was all his ears could grasp. In his band, he learned about notes, structure, melodies and many others important factors that makes sounds into music. Flu became a great saxophonist and by the second year was the first seat player of his band section. After his second year in the band, Flu quit to pursue the only genre of music that he had a true passion for, hip hop.
At the age of 13, Flu first spoke to his mother about becoming a rap artist. His seriousness about the subject led his mother to believe that hip hop would not only be a hobby for her son (at the time), but a future. He quickly formed a group called, "The Flock", which consisted of Flu Smif, who at the time went by "Flu Guru", and two of his close friends. Under the production of a past group member and self managed at ages 13- 15, the group went 2 years without producing any underground albums. Although Flu never considered himself a "group" artist, he considered his involvement in "The Flock" a valuable and memorable experience.
A solo career had now started for Flu, and with his mother as his manager, things began to look up. His mother purchased a small studio setup that enabled Flu to record and produce music. At first, it was only the vocal aspect of hip hop that Flu knew was his talent, but the biggest problem lied in having no original productions. With no original beats and no direct source for some, Flu was forced to critique his flow over industry productions. Frustrated by the lack of original productions, Flu opted to teach himself how to produce tracks. With his previous knowledge and experience with music, it was not long before Flu made his first hit single, "Pass Dat Drank". With a hip hop career on the rise along with Flu's popularity, it wasn't long before his other "after school activities" caught up with him.
All his life, Flu's mother strived to give her children the greatest field of opportunity, thus the reason she insisted that he attended a high school of academic excellence; A high school in a suburb 30 minutes from his old neighborhood. But for some reason, wherever he went, troubled followed closely behind. Throughout his years in high school, Flu created an office record the size of Webster's dictionary, with all sorts of accusations including felonious assault, suspicion of possession with intent to supply, home invasion, and carrying a concealed weapon (ccw), to name a few. Law officials became so suspicious of Flu's activity as a sophomore, that for 4 consecutive months twice a month, Flu would randomly be taken from class for a routine search of his clothes, book bag, locker, and vehicle. To no avail, the principal and police never found a single thing.
Flu's sharp awareness and intelligence kept officials always guessing, and coming up short. Therefore, with no interruptions in life, Flu was able to continue his everyday operations as he pleased. He began rapping on his newly self produced tracks, which sometimes featured one of his closest friend's, Boogy. The two developing artist spent countless hours after school recording tracks and writing music. When that wasn't the activity, it was hustling that consumed the majority of Flu's time. Flu saw the addition of Boogy to the dynasty was perfect, and Boogy agreed. Consequently, before Flu and Boogy were able to finalize their first compilation, Boogy was arrested on attempted murder charges, and was soon after sentence to 15-30 years in prison.
It was devastating for Flu to lose a close friend and business partner at such a crucial time. To make matters worse, Flu's mother soon after revealed to him that she was having surgery for breast cancer. That day, his heart had been broken, merely by the thought of losing his mother. A week after his mother received surgery, doctors had discovered that they made a huge mistake. Soon after, his mothers condition became terminal, and she died when Flu was 17 years old.
Feeling lost and in question of his faith, Flu's mind transformed into "absolutely-not-giving-a-fuck-mode", where his activities became over malicious. The changing point from this mindset came the day he led police on a wild foot chase on Detroit east side, carrying his fully loaded Glock 40 in hand. "I couldn't tell you what I was thinking that day... I was like FUCK IT tho! They gon' have to CATCH ME!... then I got loose on they ass!" After successfully evading 18 police officers and 4 squad cars, the police immediately issued a warrant for his arrest. After a week of deep meditation, Flu turned himself in to police. While consulting his lawyer, Flu was informed that the police had issued the warrant on the bases that they had acquired a prosecuting witness. The witness, in fact, was a close associate of Smif's who provided convicting information to Detroit Police officials. After being released on bond, Flu began, what he describes as a process of reformation, during which time he produced and recorded 50 tracks. Just like his mother, Flu was an entrepreneur, and by first hand observation, he knew it took a dedicated boss to build a business to success. He firmly decided he would slow down on the "hot boy" activities, and focus on what he knew was his natural calling.... music.
"A hard life takes a strong heart, and a strong heart needs a stronger mind." These words spoken by Flu Smif contest to his past, present, and future. "Sometimes its hard to understand why the cards get dealt the way they do in life, but I realized its just not formatted for US to understand, we are simply still here to keep living, and that's what I'm doing... living." He now says that he keeps his mother alive within himself, reminiscing on the many life lessons that he learned from her. Musically, Flu has plans on taking his musical talents to unforeseen levels, which he explains is far past all the glitz and glamour most people hope for and expect out of a music career. "To me, its most important to be a provider. Many people don't have the opprotunity, nor exposure to be or do what they truly want in life. By God's grace, my musical talents enable me to do what I want in life, and still be a provider for my people." ~Flu Smif
