Personal Blurb:“A Tale of Two Citiesâ€Well, I was born breech (feet appearing first) with my feet on the ground and have been marching to the beet of my own drum ever since. I am the middle child of four raised in Brooklyn New York spending every summer in Charleston South Carolina affording me the best of two worlds; which groomed me into a sassy city girl with southern sensibility and charm. Most of who I am is a direct result of the backdrop in both worlds. I spent every weekend with my Nana who owned and operated the infamous Park-Inn Bar and Grill in Brooklyn and my Big-Daddy (grandfather) who was a popular number runner and hustler. The Park-Inn was where I witnessed the art and beauty of exotic and go-go dancers sache to the blaring sounds of a live band. I watched lover’s slow grind on fire, lit by the magical embers of the juke box glowing tunes. I was god-fathered by neighborhood gentlemen of leisure (Pimps) with names like Free, Sugar Boy, Indian Tony, and Light Skinned Pete. It wasn’t uncommon for me to play child hood games with children mothered by their respective ladies of leisure; Peaches, Faye-Baby, Big-Marie, and Baby-Sis. And, when summer rolled around we caught the Amtrak train to Charleston S.C where we picked beans, shucked corn, and ate lots of rice (geachy essential). Church wasn’t optional and the power of God was evident as it moved through the service healing, slaying, saving, and heartrending believers gathered. My Grand-mamma hummed a combination of Black Foot Indian chants and spirituals in the kitchen over a pot of grits before day in the morning, as my Grand-daddy smoked a cherry tobacco filled pipe and plowed his fields with one mule and his own back. The dichotomy of my two worlds is the mirror image reflected today. I have taken my parade to Atlanta, GA where I am making a conscious attempt to merge the two worlds writing my own chapter in this ongoing “tail of two cities.†Stay tuned, there is much more too come!Professional Blurb:I, Told Two Friends, She Told Two Friends, and So On......Althea Spellman has built an impressive career as a Media Relations Specialist in the music industry for over ten years.
