FATS HAMMOND

About Me

"...As if they are being called to church, one by one, regular members of the congregation file into Dodge Street Grill, beckoned by the first vintage chords of Ken Clark and Marty Rowen's Hammond B3 organs. It's a Tuesday night at 9:30. For about half the crowd, listening to the black-clad quartet that is Fats Hammond (named from the first time they played this gig on Fat Tuesday) is something they have only done in the last couple of years, since turning the magical age of 21.More seasoned music lovers have seen these guys draw the crowds to Salem nightspots for years. This group has held a residency at Dodge Street for nearly a decade, their funky sound resonating with a diverse mix of people. Both boxy instruments are perched precariously and Rowen's balances on a piece of plywood that extends the tiny stage by a few feet.By 11:15, college students get their groove on beside AARP card holders to this funky organ music, now retro but popular in its '60s heyday. A few are quickly sucking back beers, while a middle-aged couple stand near the door drinking in the music, without a glass or bottle in hand..." by Dinah Cardin.
