Born on October 1987 in Zejtun, Malta; Adrian Debattista (alias Nitrox), was always keen on writing poems and lyrics as from a young age of 6, but at those times he never really applied his writing to any musical style. After taking part in a poem and art exhibition, at the age of 11, he was soon approached by 13-year-old Canadian/Maltese bassist Jeffery, part of an Alternative Rock band, and asked him if he could be the band’s ghostwriter so that they would be able to start working on some original songs and not just covers. Adrian soon accepted Jeff’s proposal and the following day he was at the band’s garage showing some of his best lyrics he made so far and the band instantly began some jamming sessions and experimenting some song structures with the lyrics. It wasn’t long till Adrian started writing lyrics with a real song layout tailored specifically for the band’s style, but now thanks to the band the lyricist was starting to be driven by another passion besides writing, and that was the music itself. So he started listening to the likes of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Soundgarden, Foo Fighters and Nirvana which were some of the most influential acts to the band itself.Almost a year after Adrian had joined the band, the vocalist of the band had to leave Malta for family reasons and the band finished up with no vocalist. The lyricist, though, had been doing some vocal experiments on his own and also with the band as a backing vocalist, so he volunteered to try out and start rehearsing with the band as a lead vocalist. Although some songs turned out to be quite well, Adrian still didn’t feel that he did not belong totally to that style of music and felt that there’s still something else which he has not tried yet. That was the same year in which heavyweight MC, Eminem, released his second and one of the most controversial albums in Hip-Hop history; “The Marshall Mathers LPâ€. This immediately captured the attention of Adrian, who started getting huge interest in the album’s tracks and felt that he finally discovered the style of music that suited his inspirational needs. Within a few days he started taking interest in other MCs and Hip-Hop had become his main musical style. Soon enough his lyrics took quite a new shape since they were transformed into Rap verses and everything started to make more sense to him in his writing since he felt that he could now express his thoughts and feelings more freely, than ever before. Obviously he didn’t want to just leave the lyrics written, he rapped them too. Throughout this period he felt he could not continue taking part in the band unless, the band agreed to start experimenting with another type of Alternative Rock; the phenomenon of Nu-Metal, which fuses Hip-Hop and Alternative Metal. But it happened that the other members of the band where also starting to engage themselves into other musical styles such as Goth and Punk and therefore it was finally decided that all members should go to their separate ways, but still remain in contact. Now focused on his Hip-Hop influence he kept on writing verses whenever he felt so. After 3 years experimenting with his writing and vocal abilities, he thought it’s time that his message in his lyrics have be heard by other people. So he decided that he should record a track to start getting some airplay. That’s when he teamed up with singer Raquela and Freetime Productions to record the Pop-Rap Crossover “Get Away†in August 2004. This was meant to be just an experiment, a trial track, but it turned out to be quite a hit with many listeners and received regular airplay and good reviews from radio DJs. Considering that was just the first track he recorded, it seemed to be quite a good start for the teen MC. In spite all this, he still felt that it was too early for him to go mainstream and kept on working behind the scene till he felt ready to start going mainstream on a more professional level than before.Nitrox’ musical influences include Hip-Hop Legends such as Tupac, Rakim, Notorious B.I.G. and Big Pun as well as other modern but great MCs such as, Eminem (as already mentioned), as well as Nas, DMX and currently one of the best underground rappers around; Esoteric. Apart from Hip-Hop, Metal bands such as P.O.D., Limp Bizkit and Korn are also a great influence to his musical inspirations as well as the fact that he was part of band which had a remarkably different musical genre then he is currently working on. The MC’s idea basically is of having the fundamentals of Hip-Hop in every track but fusing them with other styles of music, intentionally making every track pleasing to everyone even to those who are not familiar with the urban music scene, but not letting the other music element overtake the main musical style of the track, that is, of course, Hip-Hop.The stage name “Nitrox†mainly symbolises his verses’ main lyrical content. “Nitro†is metaphor for the adrenaline, anger and even the fast compound syllable rapping that he is mainly used to do, whilst the “X†is a symbol of the unknown and hidden; the name Nitrox was formed; which also happens to be an anaesthetic gas. Therefore his lyrics basically talk about things which either due to the traditional society’s intolerance or other, they cannot be freely and easily expressed, so he figured out that the best way to deliver his message, to people, is subliminally, through his music.
