PATRICK MARIE-MAGDELAINE

About Me

Guyanese guitarist PATRICK MARIE-MAGDELAINE, also called PANAMA by his friends, has always been known for the warm and airy swing of his music. His first album, CARIBBEAN COOL JAZZ brings together the delicate sounds of cool jazz and the warmth of Caribbean rythms. On piano we have TOM MAC CLUNG, GUY NSANGUE plays the bass, ARNOLD MOUEZA plays percussions, VALERY LOBE plays drums and PANAMA plays all guitars. Born in France, in the happy town of Reims also known as Champagne country, he was raised on the Caribbean lullabies his parents used to listen to. He started playing music at 17 by performing with big bands in ballrooms and small jazz combos all around the region. At 23 he decided to sharpen his musical education in Paris in one of the most professionnal schools at the time, the CIM. He was quickly spotted for his flowing cool style and for being a versatile musician. And soon was hired by a growing number of French and African artists. He then ran his guitar all around the world : from the Tokyo Blue Note to the Madison Square Garden in New-York. From Bercy or the New Morning in Paris to South Africa where he played for the handing over ceremony between Nelson MANDELA and Thabo MBEKI. He performed with famous artists such as PAPA WEMBA for 12 years, and was part of his band when Papa Wemba opened the show during Peter GABRIEL's world tour in 1994. He also worked many years with Sweedish saxophonist and singer Sofi HELLBORG, ugandan singer Geoffrey ORYEMA and MANU DIBANGO among others. For the last few years, PANAMA has been concentrating more on composition. He has been composing various styles of music for movies, from contemporary music with an Afro-caribbean inspiration to expressive and emotionnal rock and roll. He also composed all the tunes in his first album CARIBBEAN COOL JAZZ, except for one, borrowed to one of his masters : WES MONTGOMERY.------------------------------------------------- --------------------Guitariste de talent, PATRICK MARIE-MAGDELAINE, PANAMA pour les intimes, se distingue par le swing chaleureux et audacieux de sa musique.
