The skateboard MC has finally made a home on the west coast with the collaboration of skate/hip-hop crew, the Board Bangers. New to the music scene, the Board Bangers crew have already been embraced by MTV, BET, gone double platinum in peer-to-peer downloads and are set to release their highly anticipated, debut album The World Ain’t Ready for This in January 2008. In an unprecedented move, the Board Bangers are making history not only by launching their debut album with a video for each track on the album but by being true to their “crew†concept and utilizing and rotating new talent into the group from across the country that share their love for hip-hop and skating.
Rapping has always been an outlet of expression for urban youth, and skateboarding and the punk culture have been similar symbols of rebellion and individualism for the mainstream. But recently the popularity of artists like Pharrell and Lupe Fiasco has seamlessly blended and revitalized the two cultures into one and set the world stage for the emergence of a crew like the Board Bangers. The Board Bangers realize they are not the only kids bumping hip-hop and doing skate tricks, so they are always looking for the hottest skaters and rappers from across the country to join their crew.
Started with four Southern California street skaters hailing from the streets of Long Beach, each member bring their own unique style and energy to the crew. The original Board Bangers are Day Day who strikingly looks like Pharrell, and has talent to match. Sk8board D whose been grinding from the age of five is one the smoothest in his talk-style of rap, Lil Fean the tallest member of the group, with basketball as his second love and the first female of the group, Dymond, with her lyrics like candy coated pills. The crew has since added TY, she’s a tough talkin’ no nonsense rapper with a smooth flow on the mic the board and Devan, whose skate tricks will turn heads as well as a myriad of street skaters from around the U.S.
Despite their young age, it’s the music that keeps you riveted. The Board Bangers deliver lyrics with the same energy and skills they exhibit when on their skateboards. Combining hot tracks with melodic verses, it will be an understatement to say that the crew has earned the respect of their fan base that can’t wait to get their hands on the debut album.
Board Bangers first single, “Cuz the Beat’s Hot†drops in summer 2007. Their debut album, aptly called The World Ain’t Ready For This will be simultaneously released in January 2008. From the The World Ain’t Ready for This album, the single “Cause the Beat’s Hot†is a cross over punk/hip-hop joint complimented by a high energy music video. The album also includes tracks like Skateboard Thug a sexy, slower song and Everybody Leanin’ a southern-feelin’ club joint Loose It, an ode to the bay area’s Hyphy sound.
