From an early age, VJ Gumbo has been influenced by music and art through the work of his parents. He started learning several instruments and how to draw, paint etc. At the age of 14, he took up the drums and this is where his natural rythmn was realised. He now uses these skills in a fusion of art and music- VJing.
It's been nearly 3 years now since VJ Gumbo started wowing the city of Peterborough with his visuals which started from very humble beginnings at a music and arts centre. Since then he has been VJing regularly for a vareity of events in the City, including Rock and Metal bands, Techno, Psy-Trance, Dub, Spoken word and most recently Hard dance.
The highlight of his career came when he performed alongside DJ Hixxy at Hyperbolic.
His influences come from a variety of places; the natrual world, motion graphics, technology, emotions. His style can best be described as his name suggests: Gumbo - a kind of mixture of many things. It's mainly graphics and real world footage, augmented and twisted in ways which surprise and inspire. What they say:
"Ed's visuals were out of this world providing spinning, twisting words and shapes far beyond what I had imagined! If anyone is looking to add some spice to their event I extremely recommend you get this guys involved."- Chris Downing, organiser of SecreTechno Society
VJ Gumbo's visuals were seriously impressive. He set himself up really quickly and happily pressed his picture buttons all night long - I'm not even sure he had a break. book him, he's good!"- Pegs, organiser of The Birthday Parties
"If you've ever been to any party in this town and there's been visuals projected on the walls, chances are, it was Gumbo (aka Ed Grubb)"- Joseph Devine (promotion for The Glass Onion Winter solstice party December 2008)
"Edward is a gentle and quiet young man, whose energy and focus is all directed into his artwork. I have worked with Ed on several occasions and have found him to be highly motivated and passionate man."- Luke Payn, Fellow VJ (Article for Art and Soul Magazine November 2008)
"Always a pleasure to have young squire Gumbo melting minds with his visuals at our Psychedelic Breakdown events. A great show and an easy to deal with manner that feeds out through the organisation level and into the vibe of the room"- Andrew Gates, Owner / Manager of Club Dissident, Peterborough
