Now, lets get one thing straight here - I dont know the band personally, dont have any sort of hidden love interest for any of them - but there is something inherently sexy about a man who plays a musical instrument be it a bass or lead guitar or even the drums. And this band sure as hell oozes every bit of sex appeal that any person could ever want or hope to have...
So how did I find this band then? Myspace, of course.
This started a few conversations between the band and me and I started listening to their music and decided to go to see them perform live when they came to London. And what a showIts not just the music. I have to tread lightly here because I dont want to detract from what they do essentially as musicians. They are truly brilliant. They are technically sound, the lyrics interact perfectly with every string that is plucked on the guitar and every beat pulses in time, on time, every time. You can tell that these three guys have been doing this for ages and that they know their instruments as intimately as they would know their lovers bodies and their music is faultless. But there is something more to them. This is the reason why not every band makes it not everyone has that extra something and this band do.One of the basic elements of becoming a successful band is in sound you have to know your instrument, know what it can and cant do and how to make it do what you want it to do. Also, your sound needs to reflect your environment and image that you are selling. Thats something that draws me to the Mexicolas they arent a typical English Indie Rock band their style is more mature and definitely has more of an American rock style to it but still accessible to the English public.Every single member of the Mexicolas knows their art inside and out and it shows. If Del looked down on his bass guitar once during the whole gig to actually concentrate on what he was doing, it didnt show at all. The music flowed out of him like water skipping over rocks in a fountain. Tim was as solid as a rock his rhythm keeping the band in time and focused, pulsing like a heartbeat and every bit as essential. Jamie's lead guitar playing is like watching a spider. Hands everywhere, lightly touching down on the fret board before delicately moving on and ensnaring his audience with the web he weaves between his voice and instrument. And they look good doing it.But mostly, in my humble opinion, the key ingredient to have a successful band is passion and by God the Mexicolas have it. They love what they do they love each other, they love standing up on stage and sharing it with the world and THAT is as sexy as hell. Every performance is up to par not once have they played a bad set or even a bad song. If these guys make love with the same passion, intensity and with the total concentration that they give their music, then, well there are going to be some very, very satisfied women out there. Not only that, but they are ready to launch themselves on the international stage. The website is up, they are running as well as any Grammy award winning band would do!
So this is my appeal to you, the reader. Give them a listen. Go to their gigs. Buy their albums. Its not for them, its for you. Its not about selling their album or doing some shameless promotion on their behalf its about introducing you to the type of music that moves you emotionally, that has all the power you remember being in those songs that you loved long ago and its about appreciating quality in something as commercial as music.Mark my words today in two years time the Mexicolas will be dominating the music scene worldwide. And rightly so.
