Tokanui
Over the past 20 years New Zealand has ungone the de-institutionalisation of mental health, many New Zealand psychiatric hospitals have been closed down.
Tokanui is a place that doesn’t exist anymore. Even the name Tokanui has fallen back into non-existence. And the people who had occupied it have been ignored by grand narratives of history. This project looks at the spaces and places left behind. It looks at the remainates of human life, and a culture that was left behind.
