About Me
I've been the guitarist with the bands SEPTEMBER, AZURE and ECLIPSE since the mid 90's. Before that in the 70's and 80's when I had considerably more hair I played with the bands VAGABOND, BAGHDAD POLY and CAPTAIN PUGWASH , picking band names has never been a strong point. I now have five rocky, funky, bluesy, jazzy, latiny, guitary instrumental CD's available at cdbaby.com and at itunes. I've written a few notes below about each of the above tracks, reading these should provide a cure for any insomnia you may have. If you want to read more incoherent ramblings about all my songs then if you can face it visit www.cdbaby.com/all/martinrigby or click on an icon below. Thanks for visiting and listening.
HEARTBREAK (3.30) – Track 02 – CD WHAT LIES BENEATH
A short ballad inspired by the most excellent Paul Gilbert. It was written and recorded over two days on the 16th and 17th July 2008.
DEJA VOODOO (4.52) – Track 06 – CD WHAT LIES BENEATH
A 12 bar (ish) tune in A minor. All the guitar parts were recorded with a Fender strat. It's got a bit more of a slappy / twangy edge going on than normal for me.
PURE AZURE (3.35) – Track 03 – CD BLUEPRINT
According to the reviews this track sounds like ‘a diamond sliding down a velvet ribbon’ and ‘un vrai joyau atmospherique, un marriage subtile de l’acoustique et de l’electrique’, which is very nice of them. Played live with the band ‘AZURE’ on a number of occasions, but not for a few years.
BEYOND THE BLUE HORIZON (4.30) – Track 01 – CD EYEWITNESS
I originally wrote this tune for the band ‘AZURE’. It was influenced by the fact that I had just got a nylon-strung guitar and was listening to a lot of Peter White. It marked a slight change of direction for me in that there are only acoustic guitars on the track, oh no. The slightly tricky guitar bit was the unaccompanied run down at the end of the guitar solo. Well it was tricky for me, I don’t think Mr Satriani would be losing sleep.
BAD TO THE BONE (3.52) – Track 11 – CD EYEWITNESS
A definite smooth funky influence creeping in here, particularly the verse melody line. There is also a bit of slapped bass (steady on) in the break before the reverb drenched opening note of the solo.
CINCO DE MAYO (3.39) – Track 01 – CD CINCO DE MAYO
I started recording this on the 5th May, hence the title. This is a simple 12 bar in D minor and is one of a few of my songs I play live with the band 'ECLIPSE'. The song features Kerry who was with the band at the time on the intro on vocals and also features John from the band on sax. Fascinating stuff eh!
IT’S TOO LATE (4.14) – Track 04 – CD CINCO DE MAYO
This song was inspired by an episode of 'Without a Trace'. I thought this track would suit the end sequence they had in a number of episodes. The solo starts on the nylon strung then moves over to the electric. Oh really I can hear you saying, how interesting, tell me more. It could be worse, you could be sat next to me in a bar discussing obscure 70's rock bands (Nutz and Strife anyone?), funk bands (Slave and Breakwater?) or comparing the relative merits of Ritchie Blackmore Vs Tommy Bolin or Louis Johnson Vs Larry Graham.
MOCKINGBIRD (3.59) – Track 09 – CD CINCO DE MAYO
A 95 b.p.m. mid tempo rocky number. This tune was languishing on 'death row' for some time and only made the CD at the last minute. Four more tunes recorded for the CD weren’t so lucky and are destined to a life of obscurity unless they rise Lazarus like to feature on a future CD.
MARINA DEL REY (4.33) – Track 01 – CD CHASE THE SUN
Written whilst on holiday in Los Angeles in April 06, in, believe it or not, Marina Del Rey. This is my nod to the excellent Steve Oliver whose CD's are a frequent companion when vacationing in sunny climates. The solo section is well away from Steve Oliver territory, it's on electric for starters. I went for a Jeff Beck / Joe Bonamassa type hard hammer and bend on the first few notes then it's away into my normal pinched squeals, tapping and string skipping territory.
VENEZIA (4.53) – Track 05 – CD CHASE THE SUN
Named after the DeArmond Venezia guitar rather than the place – although they are both pretty special.
