About Me

MrWinter is a multi-instrumentalist based in Wellington, New Zealand.
His most active current project is "The Grind - Living With The Temper" sessions in which a new track is written, recorded and produced in 4 hours every Friday night. Each track then airs on RadioActive 89FM an hour or so after its completion.
Some of the more current tracks are presented here, along with a preview track from the forthcoming album.
More information on The Grind sessions, the entire collection of tracks and an album a selection of the first 32 is available at The Home Of The Grind.
Work is also well underway on his third solo album.
Recently, MrWinter has gathered the talents of fellow musicians and writers to create new tracks under many guises and polish the performances of his own material for live performances, as well as producing and engineering other musicians' work in his studio. His six piece band debuted at Happy bar and venue in Wellington in March 2007.
Lazy Susan live at Happy, Wellington. March 9 2007.
Who's Hidin' live at Happy, Wellington, March 9 2007.
His unique musical style stems from a history steeped in both performance and recording that began in the early 80's.
It began playing trumpet and then french horn with orchestras, symphonic and brass bands before moving on to choral work toward the end of that (thankfully) mostly forgotten decade. Since then, he has mastered guitars, bass, keyboards and the art of computer recording and incorporates it all to produce work that's been described as "the best human-isation of electronics I've ever heard" (member of public at debut live gig. March 2007) "wicked tunes [with] original vibes" and "like having a brass band let loose with some electronics".
Littered with "gorgeous" horns and catchy melodies, MrWinter takes pride in creating music that's both interesting and fun to listen to:
"I really enjoy keeping an element of humour in my sounds - whether it's a vocal line performed tongue-in-cheek, a horn line that sounds like a drunken Mexican playing or a crazy change in style in the middle of a track- I get a kick out of being able to laugh at what I've created. I think it's important as there are too many "serious" musicians out there.
"Don't get me wrong - most of the music I listen to on a daily basis is quite serious, or has a deeper/darker message. I have written a few tracks (more and more in recent months) that have a more sombre (or weird) element to it. It's just that I find more pleasure in performing music that makes people (including me and the people I play with) smile!"
MrWinter writes mostly in Wellington, New Zealand, where he has been based for the past ten years, although every now and then he manages to get to a secret hideaway under the mountain in Taranaki to get in touch with rural life and concentrate on creating.
Most of the production side of the operation is based in a home studio where recording time is juggled with child care and occasional work as an IT consultant to the film industry.
The little valuable time available to him is spent ferreting about like a mad scientist working on the catchy little gems to follow up his debut album "Clutch" and other singles and one off releases such as the remix of SJD's "The Witness" on Southern Lights - Pik 'N' Mix Edition released on Round Trip Mars in 2006.
