About Me

I'm a saxophonist, composer and arranger. With the exception of two years of college in the mid 80's, that's how I have made my living since 1979.I currently teach at Towson University and Archbishop Curley High School as well as privately. I also free-lance in the DC Baltimore region.I recently retired from the Army Jazz Ambassadors. I also lead two groups, The Darryl Brenzel Quartet and The Darryl Brenzel Trio. The trio is sax bass and drums and the quartet adds a piano or sometimes a guitar. The music consists of standards, jazz tunes(Wayne Shorter, Mingus, Ellington, Miles, etc) original compositions in swing, funk and latin styles as well as jazz interpretations of rock/pop tunes. I have also played with Chris Isaak, The Beach Boys, Little Anthony & The Imperials, The Four Tops, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Jerry Butler, Martha Reeves, The Drifters, Dan Akroyd, Kim Weston, Gene Chandler, Lloyd Price, Eddie Hollman........lost count. Like most musician, I do a lot of free lance work for wedding bands, rock bands, big bands, whatever. Also, I'm a big time fan of the REAL football (called soccer in the U.S.) I follow DC United and the Men's National Team.I play saxes, various flutes & whistles, percussion, keys and sing with the praise band at Daybreak Community Church in Frederick, MD. We meet Sundays @ 10:00 at the Delaplaine Art Center along Carroll Creek.
