About Me

“Sultry R&B, Soul, and Jazz rooted in the traditions of Gospel”Sherman Modeste, a tenor in Ricky Dillard’s New Generation Chorale (New G) - Choir Master of Gospel Music whose work has earned Dillard multiple Stellar Awards and a GMA Dove Award nomination - was born and raised on the island of St. Croix, USVI where he started singing as a child in church. At age 9, he moved to Connecticut and ventured further into the world of music at school in groups such as chorus, concert choir, madrigals, show choir, vocal jazz, and gospel choir. In 2003, Sherman moved to Rochester, NY to attend Monroe Community College (MCC) and soon after, his passion for music propelled him into a leadership role of the MCC Gospel Choir. Under his direction, the choir recorded and released their first CD, MCC Gospel Choir Live: Resurrection – a first in the choir's 25-year history. The choir won 1st place and Best Overall Presentation for the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ (COOLJC) International Music Conference Competition in 2005 and sang at the inauguration of Mayor Bob Duffy. Additionally, Sherman was instrumental in securing Stellar Award winner and Grammy-nominated artist, Tye Tribbett to celebrate the release of the CD and the achievements of the MCC Gospel Choir. All throughout his tenure as president of the MCC Gospel Choir, the choir sang at numerous events both on campus and in the Rochester community, aiming to help youth discover the joys and benefits of music which left many high school students considering a degree at MCC to join the choir.Sherman wrote for and sang with many local gospel artists such as: Charles Jerone, Shawanda Owens, and the MCC Gospel Choir. He sang background for Jason Wright and penned the song “You Are” on Wright’s debut album. In August of 2006, Sherman received a personal invitation from R. Thomas Flynn, President of MCC, to sing “God Bless America” for the Red Wings baseball game. Most recently, Sherman Modeste along with three collaborators launched the Muzik Box (MB4). The Muzik Box is a ministry with a special endowment to herald the gospel of Jesus Christ through the art of music. Through a unique merger of musical styles, the purpose of MB4 is to impart a message of hope, liberty, and restoration to the globe.Though gospel is his favorite genre, Sherman strives not to limit himself to this genre. He also writes and sings R&B, Soul, and Jazz and has appeared at Rochester’s Venu Resto-Lounge and Club Pazzo’s, among other venues around the city of Rochester and abroad. Sherman is hungry for his place in music history and desires to be a positive influence to youth.Heartfelt. Soulful. Colorful. All describes the impressionable music and personality of Sherman. On June 2, 2009, Sherman will release his debut album entitled Modest Conversation. Modest Conversation is a collection of songs inspired by love, personal struggle, life’s joys, and lessons learned. Influenced by John Legend and Musiq, Sherman has entertained hundreds of music lovers throughout the Rochester Community with his soul stirring performances and indelible lyric content. Sherman aspires to touch the hearts of millions, as he becomes a world-renown singer/songwriter. Stay Tuned.
