I'm glad I can edit this, because when my moods shift, the order here is not going to be at all indicative of my personality on that given day. In the meantime, though...
Guinness, mid-century jazz, mysteries, science, Old Time Radio, art (be realistic - I mean, there's a lot of sucky art, and we all know it), my friends, my family, some sports, Orange Julius, and those guys who used to set up their little stage and dance highly choreographed routines to old Paula Abdul songs in an insane amount of sequins in front of the US Bank on Broadway.
I miss them.
Not that I was a huge fan, but that was just damn interesting. They were pretty good, but I couldn't look at them directly, and I couldn't say why. If they weren't embarrassed, why was I? Also, do you think they took it, like, super-seriously? Like, did one of them have an ongoing tiff with the other? Did he call it "rehearsal" and get all snotty about it to other people - "I have rehearsal tonight - has anyone seen my dance bag? I need my SPLIT-soled jazz shoes, damnit!" - and was he all, "You have been late to the last three rehearsals - I don't feel comfortable that you're taking this seriously enough!" And were they looking for some kind of big break? I seriously want to know, but never had the necessary cruelty towards strangers to ask, and I knew I couldn't approach them without being so afraid of seeming like I was mocking them that it WOULD seem like I was mocking them. So, I continue to wonder, with no hope of any further information on the subject.
I'd like to meet:
Someone without fear. Friends - Both new and old. People who are as irritated as I am by the use of the phrase "I don't believe in..." to express a disapproval of an idea, as if the idea were the Tooth Fairy and not a fact of life - i.e., "I don't believe in (cell phones/divorce/similar)." And hell, while I'm at it, I might as well get my stuttering fangirl on and throw in Keith Olbermann and David Tennant, too!
Music:
OASIS, Garth Brooks, Frank Sinatra, Social D, ¡TchKunG!, Sneaker Pimps, DKM, Massive Attack, Etta James, The Cure, Lynryd Skynyrd, Iggy, Peter Gabriel, Michael Buble, Bleu, Jet, Stabbing Westward, Pet Shop Boys, Journey, Depeche Mode, Erykah Badu, The Pogues (but only with The Man), Tony Bennett, Dixie Chicks, KMFDM, Ella Fitzgerald, Green Day, Bob Dylan, Tonic, Chemical Brothers, Better Than Ezra, Dave Brubeck, et al.Very into jazz these days, for what it's worth.
Movies:
Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 (still haven't seen 3 yet!), Animal House, Singles, Office Space, Braveheart, Schindler's List, any of the Hope-Crosby "Road to..." movies, Roman Holiday, The Godfather (1 & 2, obviously), Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Romeo + Juliet, almost anything by David Lynch, Trainspotting, Say Anything, and too many others to mention...
Television:
"CSI: Famous Original Recipe," "House," "The Simpsons," "Doctor Who" (both old and new, but especially new, because both 9 & 10 are lovely and hilarious), "Family Guy," 95% of the Food Network, particularly "Good Eats," 'cos Alton Brown is a demi-god and I luuuurve him, Nova ("The Elegant Universe" was so good I think it got me off), BritComs of all shapes and sizes (except "My Hero" - That's just a travesty) - I'm kind of a PBS whore, but not because of any grand, sweeping social reasoning. I really love the mysteries ("Poirot," "Miss Marple," "Hetty Wainthrop," "Jonathan Creek," and especially the Mrs. Bradley mysteries). I also loveloveLOVED the BBC adaptation of "Gormenghast." If you haven't seen it, rent it. That video place that used to be in Broadway Market used to have it. "MythBusters," random History Channel programming, etc. It's pretty varied. But I like tv.
Books:
Oh, please. Here we go..."Unnatural Murder: Poison at the Court of James I." "The Three Musketeers" (what?). Almost anything by John Irving. Nero Blanc mysteries. "Uncle Petros & Goldbach's Conjecture." Sherlock Holmes mysteries are old friends... Well-written biographies (or autobiographies). Almost anything, really... I just realized I'm never going to be able to answer this to my satisfaction. Suffice it to say I'm one of those people who's always got a couple of books going, and I have stacks of them in strange places thoughout my apartment because I ran out of shelf space half a library ago. But I do really like good mysteries.
Heroes:
My mom. My cousin Lois. H.D. Thoreau. Tallulah Bankhead. Randi Rhodes of Air America Radio Nova M Radio! Bella Abzug. My big sister (http://www.kiggityca.com/html/ann.htm). My great-grandmother, even though I never met her (and even though this may be some mild form of narcissism, because I keep being told I may be her reincarnation). Whoever makes the coffee in the morning.
