Andre suffered from acromegaly, a disease that results in abundance of growth hormones known as Giantism. Andre first wrestling name was "Monster Eiffel Tower" or "Monster Roussimoff". French-Canadian wrestler Edouard Carpentier was very impressed with Andre's size and talent. Edouard brought Andre to North America. Andre wrestled under the name Jean Ferre in Canada for Grand Prix Promotions. Soon Andre met the McMahon's and acquired the nickname, "The 8th Wonder of the World," The McMahon's signed Andre to wrestle for the WWWF and became one of the most recognizable names in wrestling. Andre the Giant made history in Sports Illustrated by being largest feature ever published. 1987 A record of 90,000 fans packed the Pontiac Silver Dome in Detroit, Michigan to watch Andre wrestle fellow legend Hulk Hogan in the main event of WrestleMania III. It's been said many times that Andre Roussimoff is considered the most recognizable sports figure next to Mohammed Ali.
