DJ Cool Carla

DJ / Singer / Songwriter / Chef .......Starting out her career as a radio DJ at the age of 19, Carla Abaya (DJ Cool Carla) has made a name for herself in the music entertainment and production industry. Just within the first year of her job as a DJ in the famed WXB 102 radio station in Manila, Carla was voted one of the best DJs in the Philippines. After which came an offer to front a new wave band called Identity Crisis. Identity Crisis went on to record 2 albums and had a huge fan following (see www.myspace.com/myidentitycrisis) She moved on to other bands when Identity Crisis disbanded in 1991, forming Mariya and Mariya’s Mistress (see www.myspace.com/mariyasmistress) and joining the famed band Lokal Brown. She also went into music production, producing several rock and punk albums from up and coming bands. She also formed a duo (Dynamic Duo) with guitarist and friend Butch and recorded two acoustic songs for a compilation album produced by Ed Formoso. And all this time, she kept her career as a DJ (this time moving to LA 105, a hard rock station) and also worked for her family business for a couple of years. In the year 2000, Carla put her microphone to rest and moved onto the culinary field, studying in regional cuisines at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and Artisan bread making at the SFO Baking Institute. A world traveler, she is now back in Manila operating her own partial catering specializing in Brazilian cuisine. An animal activist, she is also very much involved in the electronica genre, creating her own blend of downtempo-trip hop music. Aside from music, she also trains for Krav Maga, boxing, badminton and in her free time, does web design and video editing.
