Barry Irie was raised in a small seaside community twenty miles north of Boston Massachusetts. His musical career began at the age of ten with the gift of his first guitar. By age eleven he had formed a band and by his early teens he was performing at local dances, community events and county fairs.
A seasoned professional by his mid-teens, Barry began searching for new forms of musical expression. Upon hearing the reggae music of Jamaica, he was inspired to write his own material expressing a personal interpretation of Jamaican and American cultures. Composing, performing and producing his own music and lyrics, his work ranges from passionate, exuberant love songs to poignant social commentary.
Barry’s track “Way Down in Jamaica” recently made him one of the most requested recording artists on Boston College Radio. His songs also air in Greece, Saudi Arabia and Belgium and were in heavy rotation on Armed Forces Radio during Operation Desert Storm. The song “Gun Man Comin’” received considerable airplay throughout the Boston area. It is based on an actual incident involving one Brother John Evaneski, a DJ in Oakland, California, gunned down in a random act of violence. Barry’s music provides a much-needed counterbalance to the drug use and violent scenarios celebrated in the current rap and hip-hop scenes.
Barry’s creative, compelling compositions propel mind and body into new and peaceful dimensions. They are his legacy, and his gift to the world.
