Like a mountain of froth built on a seething tar pit, the line between tragedy and comedy is never thinner than it is here in the City of Angels. Drive for 30 minutes, and you can travel from one of the wealthiest enclaves in the country to one of the poorest. Los Angeles embraces all its denizens with some degree of cruelty. It's a sad-amazing city we live in. A little bit of chance, a little bit of violence and a lot of gold -- we might easily have been part of Mexico. This underlying cultural schizophrenia is just one more reason Los Angeles is the greatest of all cities. That and the fact that we have the best taco trucks anywhere in the world.
