The American Hero project is a type of experimental, conceptual hip hop known as "character rap". In this type of rap the artist takes on the persona of a fictional character in order to give his or her story a greater sense of realism by telling the story through first person narrative. In the American Hero, underground emcee Son One plays the role of Private Joe Williams, a.k.a. G.I. Joe. Private Williams is a young soldier in the United States army in the midst of serving a tour of duty in Baghdad, Iraq. Pvt Williams pulls you, the listener, in to his world by taking you along on his daily patrol of the city. While on patrol Pvt. Williams shares his story and his increasing fear. The purpose of The American Hero is to state a position of anti-war but also a position of pro serviceman. It's an attempt to help people see that the men and women serving in our military are people, individuals with lives and histories and not just statistics. All profits from the sales of this album will be donated to the Disabled Veterans Association.
