Influences: Well, for as long as I can remember, there was always an eclectic selection of sounds coming from the living room while I was growing up. The best part about it.... most of it was on reel-reel :)There were groups and individuals like the Kingston Trio, Dire Straits, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Jean Michel Jarre, Mike Oldfield, Vangelis, Kraftwerk, Kristi Moore, Enya, Bach, Andreas Vollenweider, The Shadows, Frank Zappa, Tchaikovsky, Woody Guthrie, The Travelling Wilbury's, Kate Bush, Mozart, Joan Baez, and the list goes on and on.Yet, the most striking, were the pioneers of the elctronic world. Jarre, Vangelis and Kraftwerk in particular. I can think of the many nights drifting off into the abyss, while listing to the "Concerts in China" and EP's like Equinoxe.I still cast my mind back to many artists listed above, as i settle in on my own journey. Sometimes' I find myself comparing the sounds of today with those electronic pioneers. Many have time and time again revisted their style, feel (Sven Vath, still plays Kraftwerk). Tracks like Snabeln (Hugg + Pep , Physical) will instantly bring goosebumps to the back of your neck and all the way down your arms, due to its capturing of some of those classics. Not to say they are ripping them off in any way, shape or form. These are an iota of my influences, yet my most obvious when I cast back to memories of my childhood.Currently, I have been moved by John Digweed, and Paolo Mojo. Some of their live sets have been absolutely fantastic. Paolo has recently posted four mixes. All amazing, and completely different from his recent "Balance" release. Silicone Soul, has been doing some great stuff at the moment (in no particular order), Hernan Cattaneo, Stephan Bodzin, Steve Lawler, Nick Warren, Ben Watt, Jimpster,Wiggle, Nic Fanciulli, Ame, Luca Bacchetti, Ellen Allien, Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Kayot, David Kassi, Spirit Catcher, Jay Thomas, Marcelo Castelli, Plaza + Parham, Kupon, Rowan + Jaytech, Booka Shade, Timewriter, Beanfiled, Ariel Perazzoli, Jim Rivers, 16 Bit Lolitas, Andy Cato, Shlomi Aber, T-rek, Marc Houle, Funk Harmony Park, Mike Brin, Miss, Gregor Tresher, Carl Craig and not to forget Sasha. Surrounded by controversy (Ableton). His sequencing and style/feeling really touches me. The guy doesn't need to prove that he can beat mix, as long as he continues to push the program in new ways. Interestingly enough, Mr Cox has just joined the world of Ableton :)Closer to home, anyone that I have seen play recently has taught me something. I'd like to take the time to thank Sense, Thankyou for your wisdom and your support.Last on the list. THE BUFFER. I'd like to thankyou for all your time and experience in the studio. Essential :)
Sounds Like:
Sketches 006 covers the full spectrum of what I am playing at the moment.
The opening sequence of the mix creates a sense of build and tension.. opening up to an early doors groove, rolling on to the peak time sounds.
I've experimented with alot more layering than usual and recorded the mix in one shot without any editing.
I hope you enjoy it.
