About Me

NYC violin player and instructor. Versatile, interested in world folk, avant-garde, noise improv, contemporary-, post-, and just plain old- classical, etc.I teach in my private studio in Brooklyn, as well as at the Harlem Children's Zone Promise Academy. The long story:I began playing violin at age 5 in the Suzuki method, and grew up listening to classical music and Motown. Received my first taste of musical immersion during summers at Interlochen - a northern Michigan music camp. After completing studies at LU in violin performance, I undertook a year long, solitary journey in Europe, where ostensibly, I studied violin pedagogy with a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. During this year, however, I became disillusioned with what had been my goals as a violinist - learning the standard repertoire and finding a position in an orchestra or music school - and became aware that the standard repertoire, even the aesthetic of Western tonality, was not adequate for expressing myself. In fact, I became aware that "studying" a form of music was not much of a creative endeavor at all, but rather an act of absorbing. In an effort to create my own musical vocabulary, I stopped playing violin, choosing instead to explore writing and noise-making.I alternated between thinking I was crazy, or that I was really onto something. I eventually found my way into the international experimental noise community; finding other musicians from a similar background who had also rejected conservatory training was life-altering. I felt validated.Once I moved to NYC, and found a little solace in Brookyn, I picked up the violin again, initially with the duo SlowNoises, and eventually Shara Worden's AwRY (My Brightest Diamond), and the Luminescent Orchestrii. I found comradeship with these musicians who stretch the boundaries of their fields. Now that I understand that there's a whole world of sound out there, I am less inclined to judge any of it, and am simply interested in participating in it.- Julianne Carney

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Anyone interested in noise/experimental/cross-genre/improvising/acoustic/electric /world/folk music.I value honesty, passion, dedication, commitment, experimenting, and making mistakes but admitting them.I enjoy discussing teaching methods - specifically incorporating noise improv, world-folk, and composition into classes for young students.I'm also interested in collaborating with other NYC teachers to create group classes for young students.
