Sounds Like: From the IEWeekly (by Rich Kane)www.ieweekly.com:So you start this band. A different kind of band, one that certainly won't get played on commercial radio, maybe one that's too unusual even for college radio (and those kids'll play anything ). You're not emo, not screamo, not punk, not Cookie Monster metal, definitely not a tribute band . . . why not screw all possible definitions, then, and start your own damn genre? And so it came to pass that Twang Slang of Satan—perhaps the finest band in all of Bloomington, de facto leaders of the Bloomington scene (which includes Twang Slang of Satan and . . . um, Twang Slang of Satan), birthed what they've dubbed gorebilly, which to us sounds a lot like Tom Waits if he were covering Cannbial Corpse songs. And they're great—a fascinating listen, hearing these disembodied (disemboweled?), lurching rhythms flop along accompanied by banjos straight out of Deliverance and creepy-guy vocalizing. And you gotta love how they describe themselves: “The delusion of toothless hicks slaughtering an innocent with their grandpappy's sling blade while watching The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and masturbating with the viscera of their victims.” Awesome, or what? But what of the actual tunes? Well, “Screams of the Swine,” with its mash-up of screeching pigs, weird basslines, and lines like “Stick ‘em with a pitchfork, hang ‘em like a slab o' pork!” make it all oddly enchanting, beautifully amusing . . . hell, you could even dance to it. Then there's the genre-defining anthem “Gorebilly,” with its should-be classic refrain “We're out for brains! We're out for brains! We're out for brains!” Years from now, when gorebilly band package tours are selling out Hyundai Pavilion every summer, and when gorebilly songs are being crooned by the well-polished American Idol kids, we can look back at Twang Slang of Satan and say we were present at the conception.
